2 Kings – Old Testament
  • 1. Elisha replied, “Listen to the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord: 'Tomorrow, about this time, at the gate of Samaria, a measure of fine flour and two measures of barley will be sold for a piece of silver' “.
  • 2. Then an official, on whose arm the king was leaning, asked the man of God: “Even if the Lord opened the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” And Elisha declared: “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”

The siege is lifted

  • 3. There were four lepers at the entrance to the city. They said to each other, “Why should we wait here to die?
  • 4. If we decide to enter the city, there is famine inside, and we will die. If we stay here, we will also die. So let's go to the Aramean camp. If they spare us, we will live; If they kill us, we will die.”
  • 5. When evening came, they got up and went to the Aramean camp. When they reached the edge of the camp, they saw that there was no one there.
  • 6. For the Lord had made the Arameans hear the sound of chariots and horses, the sound of a great army. Then they said to one another, “The king of Israel must have hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us!”
  • 7. So that very night they got up and fled, leaving behind their tents, their horses, their donkeys, and the camp as it was.
  • 8. When the lepers reached the edge of the camp, they entered a tent, ate and drank, and took with them silver, gold, and clothing. Then they came back and hid everything. Then they returned and entered another tent, plundered it and also hid its treasures.
  • 9. Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This is a day of good news, and we cannot remain silent. If we wait until dawn, we will be punished. Let us go now and report this to the king’s palace.”
  • 10. So they went and called the city guards and told them: “We went to the Aramean camp and there was no one there. There was no sign of people, just the horses and donkeys tied up, and the tents were intact.”
  • 11. Then the city guards announced the news inside the king's palace.
  • 12. And the king arose in the night and said to his servants, “I will tell you what the Arameans are plotting. They know we are hungry, so they left the camp and hid in the field, thinking, 'When they leave the city, we will capture them alive and enter the city.'
  • 13. One of the king's servants suggested, “Let some men take five of the remaining horses in the city. Their lives will be like the lives of all the Israelites who remained in the city; their lives will be like the lives of the whole crowd. Then we will send these men to find out what happened.”
  • 14. Then they took two war horses with their horsemen, and the king sent them after the Aramean army, saying, “Go and see what has happened.”
  • 15. Then they followed the trail of the Arameans to the Jordan, and all the way was full of clothes and weapons that the Arameans had abandoned when they fled. The messengers returned and told the king everything.
  • 16. Then the people went out and plundered the Aramean camp. So a measure of fine flour and two measures of barley were sold for a piece of silver, according to the word of the Lord.
  • 17. The king had placed the officer, on whose arm he leaned, in charge of the city gate. But the people ran him down at the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said when the king came down to him.
  • 18. It happened exactly as the man of God had said to the king: “Tomorrow, about this time, at the gate of Samaria, a measure of fine flour and two measures of barley will be sold for a piece of silver.”
  • 19. But the officer had replied to the man of God: “Even if the Lord opened the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” And the man of God declared: “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”
  • 20. And so it happened to him; the people trampled him at the gate, and he died.
