The widow's oil

  • 1. One day, a woman, the wife of one of the prophets' disciples, came to Elisha, saying: “Your servant, my husband, has died, and you know that he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come to take my two sons as slaves.”
  • 2. Elisha asked, “What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have at home?” She replied, “Your servant has nothing but a jar of oil.”
  • 3. Then Elisha said, “Go and borrow vessels from all your neighbors. Ask for a lot of containers.
  • 4. Then go into the house, close the door, and pour the oil into all these vessels, and separate the full ones.”
  • 5. Then she left and closed the door of the house, pouring the oil into all the vessels that her children brought for her.
  • 6. When all the vessels were full, she said to one of her sons, “Bring me one more vessel.” But he replied, “There are no more vessels.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
  • 7. She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt. And you and your children will live on what remains.”

The Resurrection of the Shunammite's Son

  • 8. On one occasion, Elisha went to Shunem, where a rich woman insisted that he eat at her house. Since then, whenever he passed by, he would stop for a meal.
  • 9. The woman said to her husband, “I see that this man who always comes here is a holy man of God.
  • 10. Let's make a small room on the terrace, with walls, a bed, a table, a chair and a lamp. That way, when he comes, he can rest there.”
  • 11. One day, when Elisha arrived, he went to the room on the roof and lay down.
  • 12. He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” And Gehazi called her, and she stood before Elisha.
  • 13. Then he said to Gehazi, “Tell him, 'You have treated us with all this care. What can we do for you? Do you want us to speak for you to the king or the commander of the army?' ” She replied, “I am well among my people.”
  • 14. Later, Elisha asked Gehazi, “What can we do for her?” Gehazi replied, “She has no children, and her husband is old.”
  • 15. Elisha said, “Call the Shunammite.” And Gehazi called her, and she stood before Elisha.
  • 16. Elisha said to her, “About this time, a year from now, you will be embracing a son.” She replied: “No, my lord! Do not deceive your servant, O man of God!”
  • 17. But as Elisha had said, the woman conceived, and the following year she gave birth to a son.
  • 18. The boy grew up, and one day he went to the field, where his father was with the harvesters.
  • 19. Suddenly he shouted to his father: “Oh, my head, my head!” The father said to a servant, “Take him to his mother.”
  • 20. The servant took him to his mother, and he remained in her lap until noon, when he died.
  • 21. Then she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God. He closed the door and left.
  • 22. She called her husband and said to him, “Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys. I must quickly go to the man of God and return.”
  • 23. He asked, “Why are you going to see him today? It’s not a new moon or a Saturday.” She replied, “Don’t worry.”
  • 24. Then she had the donkey saddled, and said to the servant, “Go quickly; Do not stop on the way unless I tell you to stop.”
  • 25. So she departed, and went to the man of God on Mount Carmel. When he saw her from afar, he said to Gehazi his servant, “Look, here comes the Shunammite!
  • 26. Go to her and ask: 'Is everything okay with you? With your husband? With your son?' ” She replied, “It’s okay.”
  • 27. When she came to the man of God on the mountain, she caught his feet, but Gehazi approached to push her away. Then the man of God said: “Leave her, for her soul is bitter, and the Lord has not revealed to me why.”
  • 28. She said, “Have I asked my master for a son? Didn’t I tell you not to give me false hope?”
  • 29. Then Elisha said to Gehazi, “Gird up your loins, take my staff in your hand, and go. If you meet someone, do not greet him; If someone greets you, do not respond. Place my staff on the boy’s face.”
  • 30. But the boy's mother said, “As the Lord lives and as your life lives, I will not leave you.” Then Elisha got up and followed her.
  • 31. Gehazi went before them and laid his staff on the boy's face, but there was no voice or sign of life. Then he returned to meet Elisha and told him: “The boy did not wake up”.
  • 32. When Elisha arrived at the house, there was the boy lying dead on the bed.
  • 33. He went in, closed the door and prayed to the Lord.
  • 34. He climbed onto the bed and lay down on the boy. He put his mouth over his mouth, his eyes over his eyes, and his hands over his hands. As he leaned over him, the boy's body began to heat up.
  • 35. Then Elisha went down and walked around the house from one side to the other, and he went up again and bent over the boy. The boy sneezed seven times, and then opened his eyes.
  • 36. Elisha called Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” He called her, and she entered. Elisha said, “Take your son.”
  • 37. She prostrated herself, face to the ground, and bowed before him. Then he took his son and left.

The poisonous green broth

  • 38. Elisha returned to Gilgal during the famine that was in that land. While the sons of the prophets were sitting before him, he said to his servant, “Put the large pot on the fire and make soup for the sons of the prophets.”
  • 39. One of them went out into the field to gather herbs and found a wild vine, with the fruits of which he filled his cloak. He came back and cut the fruits into the soup pot, without anyone knowing.
  • 40. Then they served the men the soup, but as soon as they began to eat it, they cried out, “O man of God, death is in the pot!” And they could not eat.
  • 41. Elisha said, “Bring me some flour.” He threw it into the pot and said, “Serve everyone.” And there was nothing harmful in the pan anymore.

Feeding a hundred men

  • 42. A man from Baal-Shalisah brought to the man of God bread of the firstfruits: twenty loaves of barley and green ears. Then Elisha said, “Give it to the men, that they may eat.”
  • 43. But the servant replied, “How can I serve this to a hundred men?” Elisha, however, said: “Give it to the men, that they may eat, for this is what the Lord says: 'They will eat and there will be leftovers'”.
  • 44. Then he served them all, and they ate and had leftovers, according to the word of the Lord.
