Moab revolts

  • 1. Joram, son of Ahab, took the throne of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of the reign of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and ruled for twelve years.
  • 2. He practiced evil in the eyes of the Lord, but not to the same degree as his father and mother, for he removed the holy pillar of Baal, which his father had erected.
  • 3. Yet he persisted in the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat led Israel to commit, and did not turn from them.
  • 4. At that time Mesha, king of Moab, had many flocks and paid the king of Israel a tribute of one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.
  • 5. But after the death of Ahab, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
  • 6. Therefore, King Joram left Samaria and mobilized all of Israel.
  • 7. He sent a message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to battle against Moab?” Jehoshaphat replied, “Yes, I will go. I am like you, my people are like your people, my horses are like your horses.”
  • 8. Then Jehoshaphat asked, “Which way shall we attack?” Joram replied, “Through the wilderness of Edom.”
  • 9. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom departed. After a seven-day march, there was no more water for the army and the animals that accompanied them.
  • 10. The king of Israel exclaimed: “Ah! The Lord has gathered us, three kings, to deliver us into the hands of Moab!”
  • 11. But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not a prophet of the Lord here through whom we can inquire of the Lord?” Then one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to be Elijah’s assistant.”
  • 12. Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the Lord is with him.” Then the three kings went to talk to Elisha.
  • 13. Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why are you looking for me? Go and consult the prophets of your father and mother.” But the king of Israel insisted: “No, for it was the Lord who gathered us, three kings, to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
  • 14. Then Elisha said, “I swear by the name of the Lord of hosts, whom I serve, that if it were not for the respect I have for Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay attention to him or look at him.
  • 15. Now bring me a musician.” And as the musician played, the power of the Lord came upon Elisha.
  • 16. Then he said, “This is what the Lord says: Dig many cisterns in this valley.
  • 17. For thus says the Lord: You will not see wind or rain, but this valley will be filled with water, and you and your animals and your army will drink.
  • 18. This is little for the Lord. He will also deliver Moab into your hands.
  • 19. You will destroy all the fortified cities and all the important cities. They will cut down every fruit tree, stop every spring and cover every fertile land with stones.”
  • 20. The next morning, when the sacrifice was being offered, behold, water came from the side of Edom and filled the country.
  • 21. When all the Moabites heard that the kings had come to attack them, they called together every man capable of bearing arms, from the youngest to the oldest, and took up position on the border.
  • 22. The next day, when they rose early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water, and the Moabites saw it before them as red as blood.
  • 23. Then they said, “This is blood! The kings fought among themselves and killed each other. Now, Moabites, for the plunder!”
  • 24. But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked them, and the Moabites fled before them. The Israelites advanced and invaded Moab,
  • 25. destroying the cities and, each one throwing a stone, they covered all the fertile fields. They blocked all the fountains and cut down all the fruit trees. Only at Kir-Hareseth were the stones left in their place, but the archers surrounded it and attacked it.
  • 26. When the king of Moab saw that he was losing the battle, he took seven hundred men with swords to fight his way to the king of Edom, but they were unable to do so.
  • 27. Then he took his eldest son, who was to succeed him as king, and sacrificed him as a burnt offering on the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel, so that they withdrew and returned to their own land.
