Elijah is raptured

  • 1. When the Lord took Elijah to heaven in a whirlwind, the following happened: Elijah and Elisha left Gilgal.
  • 2. On the way, Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “I swear by the name of the Lord and by your life that I will not let you go alone.” So they went to Bethel.
  • 3. At Bethel, the prophets' disciples came to Elisha and asked, "Do you know that today the Lord will take your master to heaven, separating him from you?" Elisha replied, “Yes, I know, but don’t talk about it.”
  • 4. Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” Elisha replied, “I swear by the name of the Lord and by your life that I will not let you go alone.” Then they went down to Jericho.
  • 5. In Jericho, the disciples of the prophets came to Elisha and said to him: “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master to heaven, separating him from you?” Elisha replied, “Yes, I know, but don’t talk about it.”
  • 6. After this, Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan River.” Elisha replied, “I swear by the name of the Lord and by your life that I will not let you go alone!” Then they went together.
  • 7. Fifty disciples of the prophets accompanied them and watched from a distance, while Elijah and Elisha stood on the bank of the Jordan.
  • 8. Elijah took off his cloak, rolled it up and with it struck the waters of the river. The waters parted, and the two crossed on dry land.
  • 9. After they crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “What can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” Elisha replied, “I desire to be the chief heir of your prophetic spirit.”
  • 10. Elijah said, “You have made a difficult request, but if you see me when I am separated from you, you will have what you asked for; otherwise, it will not be attended to.”
  • 11. As they walked and talked, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire, which separated them, and Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.
  • 12. When Elisha saw this, he cried out, “My father! My father! You were like the chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And when he could no longer see Elijah, Elisha took his own clothes and tore them in half.
  • 13. Then he picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and returned to the bank of the Jordan.
  • 14. Elisha struck the waters of the river with his cloak and exclaimed, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah, now?” When the waters hit, they divided, and Elisha crossed.
  • 15. When the disciples of the prophets who were in Jericho saw this, they said, “The prophetic spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” Then they went to meet him, prostrated themselves before him and said:
  • 16. “Look, we your servants are fifty strong men. Let us go in search of your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord took him and cast him into some mountain or valley.” But Elisha replied, “Don’t send anyone.”
  • 17. They insisted until, finally, Elisha, embarrassed, agreed: “You can send it”. So they sent fifty men in search of Elijah, but they looked for him for three days and did not find him.
  • 18. When they returned to Elisha, who was in Jericho, he said to them, “Did I not tell you not to go?”

Water purification

  • 19. Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “As you can see, O my lord, this city is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is barren.”
  • 20. Elisha said, “Bring me a new bowl of salt.” They brought.
  • 21. Elisha went to the spring, threw the salt there and said, “This is what the Lord says: 'I have purified these waters; From now on they will no longer cause death or sterility.'
  • 22. And to this day the waters remain pure, according to the word that Elisha spoke.

The boys make fun of Elisha

  • 23. From Jericho, Elisha went to Bethel. On the way, some boys came out of town and started making fun of him, saying: “Get out of here, baldhead!”
  • 24. Elisha turned and looked at them and cursed them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys to pieces.
  • 25. From Bethel, Elisha went to Mount Carmel and from there he returned to Samaria.
