Amaziah is king of Judah

  • 1. In the second year of the reign of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz as king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash began to reign as king of Judah.
  • 2. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem.
  • 3. Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not like his father David. He followed the example of his father Joash in everything.
  • 4. However, the high places were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense on them.
  • 5. As soon as Amaziah secured his rule over the kingdom, he ordered the murderers of his father, the king, to be executed.
  • 6. Yet he did not put to death the children of those who had committed the murders, as it is written in the Law of Moses, where the Lord commanded: “Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; each shall die for his own sin.”
  • 7. Amaziah was responsible for defeating ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and conquered the city of Selah in battle, naming it Jokteel, a name that is still used today.
  • 8. Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the grandson of Jehu, king of Israel, and said to him, “Come and meet me in battle.”
  • 18. But Jehoash answered Amaziah, “The thornbush of Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of Lebanon: 'Give your daughter in marriage to my son.' But a wild animal from Lebanon passed by and trampled the thorn bush.
  • 10. Surely you have defeated the Edomites and are now proud. Stay at home! Why bring disaster on yourself and Judah?”
  • 11. But Amaziah did not listen to the advice of Jehoash king of Israel, and they attacked each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah.
  • 12. Judah was defeated by Israel, and its soldiers fled to their homes.
  • 13. Jehoash captured Amaziah son of Joash and grandson of Ahaziah at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the city wall from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a hundred cubits long.
  • 14. Then he took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasury of the king's palace. He also took hostages and returned to Samaria.
  • 15. Now the rest of the events of the reign of Jehoash, his deeds and all his conquests, including his war against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the annals of the kings of Israel?
  • 16. Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried with the kings of Israel in Samaria. His son Jeroboam succeeded him as king.
  • 17. Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel.
  • 18. Now the rest of the events of Amaziah's reign are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah.
  • 19. A plot was hatched against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him there and killed him.
  • 20. His body was brought back on a horse and was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the City of David.
  • 21. Then all the people of Judah made Azariah, who was sixteen years old, king in place of his father Amaziah.
  • 22. Azariah rebuilt Elath and returned it to Judah after Amaziah had rested with his ancestors.

Jeroboam II is king of Israel

  • 23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash as king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Joash began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years.
  • 24. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
  • 25. He was the one who reestablished the borders of Israel from Lebo Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.
  • 26 For the Lord saw the misery of Israel, that it was bitter for all, both for slave and free, and there was no one to help Israel.
  • 27 But the Lord was not willing to blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Joash.
  • 28. The rest of the events of Jeroboam's reign, all his deeds and all his conquests, including how he recovered Damascus and Hamath for Israel, which had belonged to Judah, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 29. Jeroboam slept with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. His son Zechariah succeeded him as king.
