God's Judgment on Ahaziah

  • 1. After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel.
  • 2. One day, Ahaziah fell from the balcony of his room in the palace of Samaria and was seriously injured. He then sent messengers to consult Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if he would recover.
  • 3. However, the angel of the Lord said to the prophet Elijah of Thisbe: “Go find the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, 'Is there no God in Israel? Why are you going to consult Baal-zebub, god of Ekron?'”
  • 4. Then this is what the Lord says: “You will no longer rise from this bed and you will certainly die!” And Elijah left.
  • 5. When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, “Why did you return?”
  • 6. They answered, “A man came to meet us and said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you and say to him, This is what the Lord says: 'Why did you send to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Is there no God in Israel? Therefore you will no longer rise from this bed and you will certainly die!' '”
  • 7. The king asked them, “What was the appearance of the man you met who spoke these words to you?”
  • 8. They replied, “He was wearing fur clothes and had a leather belt.” The king realized that it was Elijah the Tishbite.
  • 9. Then he sent an officer with fifty soldiers to fetch Elijah. The officer found Elijah sitting on top of a hill and said to him, “Man of God, the king orders you to come down.”
  • 10. Elijah replied to the officer: “If I am truly a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty soldiers!” And immediately fire came down from the sky and consumed the officer and his soldiers.
  • 11. The king sent another officer with fifty more soldiers, and he said to Elijah, “Man of God, the king orders you to come down immediately.”
  • 12. Elijah replied, “If I am truly a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty soldiers!” Again, fire came down from the sky and consumed the officer and his soldiers.
  • 13. The king sent a third officer with fifty other soldiers. The officer climbed the hill, knelt before Elijah and pleaded: “Man of God, have mercy on my life and the lives of these fifty soldiers, your servants!
  • 14. I know that fire came down from heaven and consumed the first two officers and their soldiers. But now, please have mercy on my life!”
  • 15. The angel of the Lord said to Elijah, “Follow him; Don’t be afraid of him.” Then Elijah got up, went down with the officer and went to talk to the king.
  • 16. When Elijah arrived, he said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: 'Why did you ask Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Is there no God in Israel? Therefore you will no longer rise from this bed and you will certainly die!'”
  • 17. And so it happened: Ahaziah died according to the word of the Lord announced by Elijah. Since he had no sons, Joram son of Jehoram king of Judah became his successor in the second year of the reign of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat.
  • 18. The remaining events of Ahaziah's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
