Solomon carries out his duties

  • 1. After twenty years, since the construction of the temple of the Lord and the royal palace began,
  • 2. Solomon rebuilt the cities that Hiram had given him and settled the Israelites in them.
  • 3. He also attacked Hamath-Zobah and conquered it.
  • 4. Furthermore, he rebuilt Tadmor in the wilderness and all the storage cities that he had built in Hamath.
  • 5. He rebuilt the fortified cities of Upper Beth-Horon and Lower Beth-Horon, with their walls, gates, and bars,
  • 6. as well as Baalath and all his storage cities, the cities where his chariots and his horses were. Solomon built everything he wanted in Jerusalem, Lebanon and throughout the territory under his rule.
  • 7. All the people who were not Israelites, that is, the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, who were still left in the land,
  • 8. Solomon recruited them for forced labor, as is still done today.
  • 9. However, Solomon did not make the Israelites slaves for his work; they were his soldiers, leaders of his war commanders, captains of his chariots and horsemen.
  • 10. They were also the heads of government appointed by King Solomon, two hundred and fifty officials responsible for supervising the work of the people.
  • 11. Solomon brought Pharaoh's daughter from the City of David to the palace he had built for her, for he said: “My wife must not live in the palace of David king of Israel, for the places where the ark of the Lord passed they are saints.”
  • 12. Solomon offered burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord that he had built in front of the porch,
  • 13. fulfilling the regulations of Moses for the daily sacrifices, for the Sabbaths, the new moons and the appointed festivals, according to what is written in the Law of the Lord.
  • 14. And he appointed the priests to their duties, according to the division established by his father David, and the Levites to lead the praise and assist the priests, as was determined. He also appointed the gatekeepers to their positions at the different gates, according to what David, the man of God, had commanded.
  • 15. The king's orders to the priests and the Levites, including those relating to the treasures, were carried out as established.
  • 16. Thus all Solomon's work, from laying the foundation of the temple of the Lord to its completion, was accomplished. The temple of the Lord was finished.
  • 17. Then Solomon went to Ezion-geber and Elath, on the coast of Edom.
  • 18. And Hiram sent him ships with experienced sailors, men who knew the sea. They sailed with Solomon's sailors to Ophir and brought from there fifteen thousand seven hundred and fifty kilograms of gold for King Solomon.
