Reestablishment of worship and Easter

  • 1. Hezekiah sent messages to all Israel and Judah, and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, inviting them to come to the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover of the Lord, the God of Israel.
  • 2. The king, his officials and the entire community of Jerusalem agreed to celebrate the Passover in the second month.
  • 3. It was not possible to celebrate it on the specified date, as there were not enough consecrated priests and the people were not gathered in Jerusalem.
  • 4. The proposal seemed good to both the king and the entire assembly.
  • 5. Then they decided to proclaim throughout Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, summoning the people to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover of the Lord, the God of Israel, because many had not celebrated it as it was written.
  • 6. The messengers, by order of the king, went around Israel and Judah with letters signed by the king and his officials, with the following message:
  • 7. “Do not be like your fathers and brothers, who were unfaithful to the Lord, the God of your ancestors, and he gave them up to destruction, as you can see.
  • 8. Do not be obstinate like your ancestors; submit to the Lord. Come to the sanctuary that he has consecrated forever. Serve the Lord your God, so that his fierce anger may turn away from you.
  • 9. If you return to the Lord, your brothers and your children will be treated with compassion by those who captured them and will return to this land, for the Lord your God is merciful and compassionate. He will not reject you if you turn to him.”
  • 10. However, many mocked and ridiculed the messengers, who came from city to city in Ephraim and Manasseh and even Zebulun.
  • 11. But some men of Asher, Manasseh and Zebulun humbled themselves and went to Jerusalem.
  • 12. In Judah, the hand of God was on the people, giving them one heart to do what the king and his officials had commanded, according to the word of the Lord.
  • 13. A large crowd gathered in Jerusalem in the second month to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
  • 14. They removed the altars in Jerusalem and threw all the incense altars into the Kidron Valley.
  • 15. Then they slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priests and Levites, ashamed, purified themselves and brought burnt offerings to the temple of the Lord.
  • 16. They took their places according to the law of Moses, the man of God. The priests sprinkled the blood that the Levites gave them.
  • 17. Many of the people were not ceremonially clean, so the Levites had to kill the Passover lambs for all those who were not pure enough to consecrate themselves to the Lord.
  • 18. Most of the people of Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun, however, did not purify themselves, but they still ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the Lord, who is good, forgive
  • 19. one who dedicates himself to seeking God, the Lord, the God of his ancestors, even if he is not ritually pure according to the rules of the sanctuary.”
  • 20. And the Lord heard the prayer of Hezekiah and did not punish the people.
  • 21. The Israelites in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of Unleavened Bread with great joy for seven days. Daily, Levites and priests praised the Lord with resounding instruments dedicated to the Lord.
  • 22. Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites who showed a willingness to serve the Lord. During the seven days they ate their portions of the offerings and presented sacrifices of communion and praise to the Lord, the God of their ancestors.
  • 23. The whole assembly decided to extend the festival for another seven days, and they celebrated it with great joy.
  • 24. Hezekiah king of Judah contributed a thousand oxen and seven thousand sheep and goats to the assembly, and the leaders contributed a thousand oxen and ten thousand sheep and goats. Many priests purified themselves.
  • 25. The entire assembly of Judah, including the priests, Levites, the entire assembly that came from Israel, and the foreigners who lived in Israel and Judah, rejoiced.
  • 26. There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel nothing like this had happened in the city.
  • 27. The priests and Levites stood up to bless the people, and their voice was heard; their prayer reached the heavens, the holy habitation of God.
