Ahaziah is king of Judah

  • 1. The people of Jerusalem proclaimed Ahaziah, the youngest son of Jehoram, as king in his place, as all his other sons had been killed by the troops that came with the Arabs. Thus began the reign of Ahaziah son of Jehoram over Judah.
  • 2. Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. Her mother's name was Atalia and she was the granddaughter of Onri.
  • 3. He also followed the ways of Ahab's family, as his mother gave him bad advice.
  • 4. Ahaziah did what was detestable in the eyes of the Lord, just as the members of Ahab's family did, for after his father's death they became his advisors, leading him to ruin.
  • 5. He also followed their advice when he allied himself with Joram son of Ahab, king of Israel, to fight against Hazael, king of Syria, at Ramoth-gilead. Jorão was injured during the battle.
  • 6. Then Ahaziah king of Judah went to Jezreel to visit Joram, who was recovering from his wounds in Ramoth, where he had fought against Hazael king of Syria.
  • 7. Through this visit, God brought about the downfall of Ahaziah. When he arrived, Joram went out to meet him, accompanied by Jehu, son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to destroy Ahab's family.
  • 8. When Jehu was executing judgment on the family of Ahab, he found the leaders of Judah and the relatives of Ahaziah, who served him, and killed them.
  • 9. Then Jehu went in search of Ahaziah, and his soldiers captured him in Samaria, where he was hiding. Ahaziah was taken to Jehu and killed. However, they did not deny him a dignified burial, for they said: “He was the grandson of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with all his heart.” Thus, Ahaziah's family no longer had any candidate for the throne.

Athaliah and Joash

  • 10. When Athaliah, Ahaziah's mother, learned that her son was dead, she decided to kill the entire royal family of Judah.
  • 11. But Jesheba, daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash, one of King Ahaziah's sons who was about to be killed, and hid him in a room with his nurse. Thus, Jesheba, wife of the priest Jehoiada and daughter of King Jehoram, managed to hide Joash from Athaliah, preventing her from killing him.
  • 12. Joash was hidden with them in the temple of God for six years, while Athaliah ruled the country.
