Jehoshaphat is king of Judah
- 1. Jehoshaphat, son of Asa, succeeded to the throne and strengthened himself against Israel.
- 2. He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and established garrisons in Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had conquered.
- 3. The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he followed the ways of David, his predecessor. He did not seek the Baals,
- 4. but he sought the God of his father and obeyed His commandments. He did not imitate the practices of Israel.
- 5. The Lord established the kingdom of Jehoshaphat, and all Judah brought him gifts, which brought him great wealth and honor.
- 6. He walked boldly in the ways of the Lord and removed the idolatrous altars and sacred poles from Judah.
- 7. In the third year of his reign, Jehoshaphat sent his officers Benehail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nathanael, and Micaiah to teach in the cities of Judah.
- 8. They were accompanied by the Levites Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jonathan, Adonijah, Tobiah, Tob-Adonijah, and the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
- 9. They went through all the cities of the kingdom of Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the Lord and teaching the people.
- 10. The fear of the Lord fell on all the kingdoms around Judah, so they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat.
- 11. Some Philistines brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, in addition to the silver they paid as tribute, and the Arabs brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred goats.
- 12. Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful; built fortresses and store cities in Judah,
- 13. where he stored large quantities of provisions. He also kept experienced warriors in Jerusalem.
- 14. The list of these warriors, organized by families, was as follows: Of the 1,000 warriors in Judah: Adna, leader with 300,000 soldiers;
- 15. After him, Johanan, leader with 280,000 soldiers;
- 16. And then Amaziah son of Zichri voluntarily served the Lord with 200,000 soldiers.
- 17. From Benjamin: Eliada, a valiant warrior, with 200,000 soldiers armed with bows and shields;
- 18. Jehozabad, with 180,000 soldiers armed for battle.
- 19. These were the men who served the king, besides those who were in the fortified cities throughout Judah
