Saul anointed by Samuel

  • 1. Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul's head, and blessed him, saying, “The Lord has chosen you to be a leader for his people.
  • 2. Today, when you leave, you will find two men near Rachel's tomb in Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will tell you: 'The donkeys you were looking for have already been found. Your father now no longer cares about them and is worried about you. He's asking himself, 'How will I find my son?' '
  • 3. “From there, you will head towards the Oak of Tabor. Three men will go up to the sanctuary of God at Bethel and meet you there. One of them will be carrying three goats, another three loaves of bread and another a leather vessel full of wine.
  • 4. They will welcome you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you must accept.
  • 5. “Then you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine detachment. When you arrive at the city, you will find a group of prophets descending from the altar on the mountain, playing lyres, tambourines, flutes, and harps as they prophesy.
  • 6. The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them. You will become a new person.
  • 7. When all these signs are fulfilled, do what you deem necessary, because God is with you.
  • 8. “Go ahead of me to Gilgal. I will meet you there to offer burnt offerings and fellowship sacrifices. Wait for me seven days; then I will tell you what to do.”

Saul made king

  • 9. When Saul turned to leave, God changed his heart, and all those signs were fulfilled that same day.
  • 10. When he arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets came to meet him. The Spirit of God came upon him, and he began to prophesy among them.
  • 11. When the people who knew him before saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked one another, “What happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also a prophet?”
  • 12. A man from that region replied: “And who is their father?” From that day on, the saying spread: “Is Saul also a prophet?”
  • 13. After he stopped prophesying, Saul went to the mountain altar.
  • 14. Then Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, “Where were you?” Saul replied, “We were looking for the donkeys. When we realized that they would not be found, we went to talk to Samuel.”
  • 15. “What did Samuel tell you?” asked the uncle.
  • 16. Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys were found.” However, Saul did not reveal to his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingdom.
  • 17. Samuel summoned all the people of Israel to meet with the Lord in Mizpah.
  • 18. And he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'I brought Israel out of Egypt and delivered them from the power of the Egyptians and from all the people who oppressed them.'
  • 19. But now you have rejected the God who saved you from all your troubles and afflictions. You said, 'No! We want a king to lead us.' Therefore, present yourselves before the Lord according to your tribes and clans.”
  • 20. Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel together, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.
  • 21. Then he caused the clan of Matri to approach, and the clan of Matri was chosen. Finally, Saul, son of Kish, was chosen. However, when they looked for him, he was not found.
  • 22. They asked the Lord again: “Has he arrived yet?” And the Lord replied: “Yes, it is hidden among the luggage.”
  • 23. They ran and took him out of there. When he stood up among the people, he was taller than everyone else.
  • 24. Samuel said to everyone, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him in all the people.” Then everyone shouted: “Long live the king!”
  • 25. Samuel explained to the people the laws of the kingdom. He wrote them in a book and placed it before the Lord. After that, Samuel sent the people back to their homes.
  • 26. Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by courageous men whose hearts God had touched.
  • 27. However, some idle men asked, “How can this man save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts. But Saul remained silent.
