Naboth's vineyard

  • 1. At one time, an incident occurred involving a vineyard that belonged to Naboth in Jezreel. This vineyard was next to the palace of Ahab, king of Samaria.
  • 2. Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard so that I can turn it into a vegetable garden, for it is near my palace. In return, I will give you a better vineyard or pay you its value in money.”
  • 3. However, Naboth replied to Ahab, “May the Lord forbid me from giving you the inheritance of my fathers!”
  • 4. Ahab returned home upset and angry because of the response of Naboth the Jezreelite, who said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on the bed, turned his face to the wall and didn't want to eat.
  • 5. Jezebel, his wife, came in and asked him, “Why are you so upset and don’t want to eat?”
  • 6. Ahab replied, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and asked him, 'Give me your vineyard for money, or, if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in exchange.' But he said, 'I will not give you my vineyard.'
  • 7. His wife Jezebel said, “You now rule Israel! Arise, eat, and be merry. I will make Naboth yours and give him the vineyard.”
  • 8. Then Jezebel wrote letters in Ahab's name, sealed them with the royal seal, and sent them to the elders and nobles of the city of Naboth.
  • 9. In her letters she wrote the following: “Proclaim a fast and place Naboth in a prominent place.
  • 10. And set two wicked men before him, to testify against him, saying, 'You have cursed God and the king!'. Then take him outside the city and stone him to death.”
  • 11. The men of the city of Naboth, the elders and the nobles, did as Jezebel commanded them, according to the letters she sent them.
  • 12. They proclaimed a fast and placed Naboth in a prominent place.
  • 13. Then two wicked men came and sat before him and testified against Naboth before the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king!” Then they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.
  • 14. Then they sent Jezebel the message: “Naboth was stoned and is dead.”
  • 15. As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, she said to Ahab, “Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, who refused to sell to you. He is no longer alive; is dead!".
  • 16. When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite and take possession of it.
  • 17. Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Elijah the Tishbite, saying:
  • 18. “Get up, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel in Samaria. He is in Naboth's vineyard, where he went to take possession of it.
  • 19. Say to him, 'This is what the Lord says: You killed and now you are taking possession?' And say further: 'Thus says the Lord: In the place where the dogs licked the blood of Naboth, the dogs will also lick his blood, yes, his blood' “.
  • 20. Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, my enemy?” Elijah replied, “I found him. Because you sold yourself to do what is evil in the eyes of the Lord.
  • 21. I will certainly bring disaster upon you: I will uproot your posterity and destroy all the males in Israel, both slave and free.
  • 22. I will make your family like that of Jeroboam, son of Nebat, and like that of Baasha, son of Ahijah, because you provoked my anger and caused Israel to sin.”
  • 23. Furthermore, the Lord spoke about Jezebel: “Dogs will devour Jezebel at the wall of Jezreel.
  • 24. Those of Ahab who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by the birds of the air.”
  • 25. Surely there was no one like Ahab, who sold himself to do what was evil in the eyes of the Lord, at the instigation of his wife Jezebel.
  • 26. He gave himself up to disgusting idolatry, following idols, just like the Amorites, whom the Lord drove out from before the Israelites.
  • 27. When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth and fasted. He slept dressed in sackcloth and walked humbly.
  • 28. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite:
  • 29. “Did you see how Ahab humbled himself before me? As he humbled himself, I will not bring this disgrace during his reign, but in the time of his son I will bring it upon his family.”
