Elijah flees to Horeb

  • 1. Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including how he had killed all the prophets of Baal.
  • 2. Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with the following message: “May the gods punish me severely if tomorrow, at this same time, I do not do to your life what you did to their lives.”
  • 3. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. He went to Beersheba in Judah and left his servant there.
  • 4. Then he walked through the desert for a day and finally sat down under a broom tree. He asked for death, saying, “I’ve had enough, Lord! Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.”
  • 5. Then Elijah lay down and fell asleep under the tree. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”
  • 6. Elijah looked around and saw bread baking over hot coals and a pitcher of water near his head. He ate, drank and lay down again.
  • 7. The angel of the Lord returned a second time, touched Elijah and said, “Get up and eat, for your journey will be long.”
  • 8. Elijah got up, ate and drank. Strengthened by food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Mount Horeb, the mountain of God.

The Lord appears to Elijah

  • 9. There he entered a cave and spent the night. Then the word of the Lord came to him and asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
  • 10. Elijah replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. The Israelites rejected your covenant, tore down your altars and killed your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are also trying to kill me.”
  • 11. The Lord said, “Go out and stand before the Lord, for the Lord will pass by.” At that moment, a strong wind swept across the mountains and broke the rocks into pieces, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
  • 12. After the earthquake, a fire came, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was a soft whisper.
  • 13. When Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak, left the cave and stood at the entrance. Then a voice asked him again: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
  • 14. Elijah replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. The Israelites rejected your covenant, tore down your altars and killed your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are also trying to kill me.”
  • 15. The Lord said to Elijah, “Go back the way you came and go to the wilderness of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael as king of Syria.
  • 16. Anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king of Israel, and also anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah to succeed you as prophet.
  • 17. Jehu will kill anyone who escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will kill anyone who escapes the sword of Jehu.
  • 18. However, I have reserved for myself seven thousand people in Israel, all those who have not kneeled before Baal and whose lips have not kissed him.”

Elisha's call

  • 19. Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen and he himself drove the twelfth yoke. Elijah approached Elisha and threw his cloak over him.
  • 20. Elisha abandoned the oxen and ran after Elijah. He said, “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will go with you.” Elijah replied, “Go back, for what have I done to you?”
  • 21. Elisha returned, took a yoke of oxen and sacrificed them. He cooked the meat of the oxen with the wood from the plow and gave it to the people, and they ate it. After this, Elisha arose, followed Elijah and became his servant.
