Elijah is fed by ravens

  • 1. Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was from Gilead, said to Ahab, “I swear by the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, whom I serve, that there will be no rain or dew in the years to come, except at my word.”
  • 2. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah, saying:
  • 3. “Leave here and go east. Hide by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.
  • 4. You will drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
  • 5. And he did according to the word of the Lord. He went and settled by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.
  • 6. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the afternoon, and he drank water from the stream.
  • 7. But after some time, the stream dried up due to lack of rain.

The widow of Zarephath

  • 8. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah, saying:
  • 9. “Get up, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. I have ordered a widow from that place to support him.”
  • 10. Then he got up and went to Zarephath. Arriving at the entrance to the city, he found a widow who was collecting sticks. He called her and said, “Please bring me some water in a jug to drink.”
  • 11. While she was going to get water, he called her and said, “Please also bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”
  • 12. But she answered, “I swear by the name of the Lord your God, I have no bread. I only have a handful of flour in a jug and some olive oil in a jar. I’m gathering some sticks to go and prepare a meal for me and my son so we can eat it and die.”
  • 13. But Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid. Go and do as you said. But first bake me a little cake and bring it to me, and then bake something for you and your child.
  • 14. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not run out and the jar of oil will not run out until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth' “.
  • 15. So she went and did according to Elijah's word. And so he and his wife and their household ate for many days.
  • 16. The jar of flour did not run out, nor did the jar of oil run out, according to the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
  • 17. After that, the son of the woman, the owner of the house, became sick. His illness worsened until there was no longer any breath of life left in him.
  • 18. Then the woman said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, O man of God? Have you come to me to remind me of my sins and make my son die?”
  • 19. He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him from his arms, took him to the upstairs room where he was staying, and placed him in his own bed.
  • 20. Then he cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, have you also brought affliction on the widow with whom I am staying by killing her son?”
  • 21. Then he lay down on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, I pray that life will return to this boy.”
  • 22. The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and life returned to the boy, and he lived.
  • 23. Elijah took the boy, came down from the upper room of the house, handed him to his mother and said: “See, your son is alive!”
  • 24. Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is true.”
