Abiam is king of Judah

  • 1. In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijah became king of Judah.
  • 2. He reigned three years in Jerusalem, and his mother's name was Maacah, daughter of Absalom.
  • 3. Like his father, he committed all sins, and his heart was not completely consecrated to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David, his predecessor.
  • 4. However, out of love for David, the Lord his God gave Abijah a lamp in Jerusalem, raising up a son to be his successor and strengthening Jerusalem.
  • 5. For David did what was pleasing to the Lord and did not fail to obey any of his commandments throughout his entire life, except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.
  • 6. There was constant warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam throughout Abijah's life.
  • 7. The other events of Abijah's reign, as well as all his achievements, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah. There was also war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
  • 8. Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. His son Asa succeeded to the throne.

Asa is king of Judah

  • 9. In the twentieth year of the reign of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah.
  • 10. He reigned in Jerusalem for forty-one years. His grandmother's name was Maacah, daughter of Absalom.
  • 11. Asa did what was pleasing to the Lord, just like David, his predecessor.
  • 12. He expelled cult prostitutes from the country and removed all the idols that his father had made.
  • 13. Even his grandmother Maacah he deposed from the position of queen mother, for she had made a disgusting idol in the form of a sacred pole. Asa tore down this idol and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
  • 14. Although the idolatrous altars were not removed, Asa's heart was completely devoted to the Lord throughout his life.
  • 15. He brought to the temple of the Lord the silver, gold, and utensils that he and his father had dedicated.
  • 16. There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reign.
  • 17. Baasha, king of Israel, invaded Judah and fortified Ramah, so that none of Asa's subjects could leave or enter his territory.
  • 18. Then Asa took all the silver and gold that remained in the treasuries of the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and gave it to his officials. He sent them to Benhadad, son of Tabrimon and grandson of Hezion, king of Syria, who lived in Damascus. He sent this message:
  • 19. “Let there be a covenant between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Come and break your alliance with Baasha, king of Israel, so that he can withdraw from my territory.”
  • 20. Ben-hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his army against the cities of Israel. He conquered Ijom, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maachah, and all Chinereth, and all the land of Naphtali.
  • 21. When Baasha heard this, he abandoned the construction of Ramah and went to Tirzah.
  • 22. Then King Asa called together all the men of Judah, and no one was excluded. They removed the stones and wood from Ramah, which Baasha had used in the construction. With these materials, Asa fortified Geba and Mizpah, in Benjamin.
  • 23. The other events of Asa's reign, all his achievements and the cities he built, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah. In his old age, Asa suffered from a foot disease.
  • 24. When Asa rested with his ancestors, he was buried with them in the City of David, his predecessor. His son Jehoshaphat became king in his place.

Nadab is king of Israel

  • 25. Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of the reign of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years.
  • 26. He did evil in the sight of the Lord, following in the footsteps of his father and leading Israel to sin.
  • 27. Baasha son of Ahijah, of the tribe of Issachar, plotted against him and killed him in the Philistine city of Gibeton, while Nadab and the entire army of Israel were besieging the city.

Basha is king of Israel

  • 28. Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of the reign of Asa king of Judah and became king in his place.
  • 29. As soon as he became king, Baasha exterminated Jeroboam's entire family. Jeroboam did not leave even a single member of his family, but he destroyed everything, according to the word of the Lord spoken by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite,
  • 30. because of the sins that Jeroboam had committed and caused Israel to commit, and because he had provoked the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.
  • 31. The other events of Nadab's reign and everything he did are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 32. There was constant warfare between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reign.
  • 33. In the third year of the reign of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king over all Israel in Tirzah, and reigned twenty-four years.
  • 34. He did evil in the sight of the Lord, following in the footsteps of Jeroboam and leading Israel to sin.
