The army divisions

  • 1. This is the list of the Israelites, heads of families, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, officers who served the king in supervising the army divisions that were on duty month by month during the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men.
  • 2. In charge of the first division of 24,000 men for the first month was Jashobeam, son of Zabdiel.
  • 3. He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the officers of the army for the first month.
  • 4. In charge of the division for the second month was Dodai, descendant of Aoí; Miclote was the leader of his division, which numbered 24,000 men.
  • 5. The third commander of the army, for the third month, was Benaiah, son of Jehoiada the priest. He was head of his 24,000-man division.
  • 6. This Benaiah was a warrior, leader of the Thirty battalion. His son Amizabade was in charge of his division.
  • 7. The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel, Joab's brother; his son Zebadiah was his successor. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 8. The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shammuth the Izrahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 9. The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira, son of Iques, of Tekoa. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 10. The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez of Pelom, a descendant of Ephraim. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 11. The eighth, for the eighth month, was Shibecai, of Husath, of the family of Zerah. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 12. The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer, from Anathoth, of the tribe of Benjamin. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 13. The tenth, for the tenth month, was Maarai, of Netophath, of the family of Zerah. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 14. The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah of Piratom, a descendant of Ephraim. There were 24,000 men in his division.
  • 15. The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai, of Netophath, of the family of Othniel. There were 24,000 men in his division.

The tribal officials

  • 16. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel: of Reuben: Eliezer, son of Zichri; of Simeon: Shephatiah son of Maacah;
  • 17. of Levi: Hashabiah, son of Kimuel; of Aaron: Zadok;
  • 18. of Judah: Elihu, David's brother; of Issachar: Omri, son of Michael;
  • 19. of Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; of Naphtali: Jeremoth the son of Azriel;
  • 20. of the descendants of Ephraim: Hosea, son of Azaziah; from half the tribe of Manasseh: Joel, son of Pedaiah;
  • 21. from the other half of the tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo, son of Zechariah; of Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner;
  • 22. of Dan: Azareel, son of Jeroam. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
  • 23. David did not count the men under twenty years of age, for the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.
  • 24. Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men, but he could not finish. Divine wrath fell on Israel because of this census, and the results did not enter King David's historical records.

The king's administrators

  • 25. Azmaveth, son of Adiel, was in charge of the palace treasures. Jonathan, son of Uzziah, was in charge of the king's stores in the distant districts, in the cities, in the villages, and in the watchtowers.
  • 26. Ezri, son of Chelub, was in charge of the rural workers, who cultivated the land.
  • 27. Shimei from Ramah was in charge of the vineyards. Zabdi, from Sifa, was in charge of the wine that was stored in barrels.
  • 28. Baal-hanan of Gederah was in charge of the olive trees and wild fig trees in Shephelah. Joash was in charge of supplying oil.
  • 29. Sitrai of Sharon was in charge of the flocks that grazed in Sharon. Shaphat, the son of Adlai, was in charge of the flocks in the valleys.
  • 30. The Ishmaelite Obil was in charge of the camels. Jedias of Meronot was in charge of the donkeys.
  • 31. The Hagarite Jaziz was in charge of the sheep. All of these were responsible for taking care of King David's possessions.
  • 32. Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counselor, a wise man and also a scribe. Jeiel, son of Hacmoni, took care of the king's children.
  • 33. Ahithophel was the king's advisor.
  • 34. Hushai the Archite was a friend of the king. Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada, son of Benaiah, and by Abiathar. Joab was the commander of the royal army.
