The singers

  • 1. David, together with the army commanders, separated some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying to the sound of harps, lyres and cymbals. This is the list of those chosen for this role:
  • 2. Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah and Asarela. Asaph's sons were under his supervision, and he, in turn, prophesied under the king's supervision.
  • 3. Of the sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jesaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah and Mattithiah, six in all, under the supervision of their father, Jeduthun, who prophesied with the sound of the harp to give thanks and praise to the Lord.
  • 4. Of the sons of Heman: Bukiah, Mattaniah, Uziel, Sebuel, Jeremoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliata, Gidalti, Romanti-ezer, Josbecasa, Maloti, Hotir and Maazioth.
  • 5. All these were the sons of Heman, the king's seer. These were born to him according to the promises that God would make him powerful. And God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.
  • 6. All these men were under the supervision of their fathers when they ministered music in the temple of the Lord, with cymbals, lyres and harps, in the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the king's supervision.
  • 7. They and their relatives, all capable and prepared for the ministry of praising the Lord, numbered 288.
  • 8. Then they were appointed to their responsibilities through a fair selection, without distinction of age, teachers and disciples.
  • 9. The first to be appointed was Joseph, son of Asaph, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all; the second was Gedaliah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 10. the third was Zaccur, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 11. the fourth was Izri, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 12. the fifth was Nethaniah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 13. the sixth was Buquias, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 14. the seventh was Jesarela, with her children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 15. the eighth was Jesaiah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 16. the ninth was Mattaniah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 17. the tenth was Shimei, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 18. the eleventh was Azareel, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 19. the twelfth was Hashabiah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 20. the thirteenth was Subael, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 21. the fourteenth was Mattithiah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 22. the fifteenth was Jeremoth, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 23. the sixteenth was Hananiah, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 24. the seventeenth was Josbecasa, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 25. the eighteenth was Hanani, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 26. the nineteenth was Maloti, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 27. the twentieth was Eliata, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 28. the twenty-first was Hotir, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 29. the twenty-second was Gidalti, with his children and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 30. the twenty-third was Maazioth, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in all;
  • 31. the twenty-fourth was Romanti-ezer, with his sons and relatives; there were twelve in total.
