The conquest of Rabbah

  • 1. The next spring, when kings used to go out to war, Joab led the army of Israel and devastated the land of the Ammonites. While David remained in Jerusalem, Joab besieged Rabbah, the capital, and conquered it, leaving it in ruins.
  • 2. David took the crown from Molech's head, a golden crown weighing thirty-five pounds, adorned with precious stones. And he put it in his own head. Furthermore, he plundered the city, taking with him a large quantity of spoils.
  • 3. David also took the inhabitants of Rabbah, subjecting them to work with saws, iron pickaxes and axes. He did the same with all the Ammonite cities. Then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.

War against the Philistines

  • 4. After this there was a war against the Philistines in Gezer. In this battle, Shibecai, from Hushat, killed Shipai, one of the descendants of the Rephaim, and thus the Philistines were defeated.
  • 5. In another battle against the Philistines, Elanan, son of Jair, killed Lami, brother of Goliath of Gath. Lami had a spear with a shaft that looked like a shuttle weaver.
  • 6. There was also a giant in Gath, of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, making a total of twenty-four fingers. He was also a descendant of the Rephaim.
  • 7. This giant challenged Israel, but Jonathan, David's brother and son of Shimea, killed him.
  • 8. These were descendants of the Rephaim in Gath, and were killed by David and his soldiers.
