The gatekeepers

  • 1. This is the list of the groups of the gatekeepers: Of the Koreites, Meshelemiah, son of Korah, of the family of Asaph.
  • 2. These were the sons of Meshelemiah: Zechariah, the first; Jediael, the second; Zebadiah, the third; Jatniel, the fourth;
  • 3. Elam, the fifth; Johanan, the sixth; and Elioenai, the seventh.
  • 4. These were the sons of Obed-Edom: Shemaiah the first; Jehozabad, the second; Joah, the third; Draw, the fourth; Nathanael, the fifth;
  • 5. Amiel, the sixth; Issachar, the seventh; and Peuletai, the eighth. For God had blessed Obed-Edom.
  • 6. His son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders in their father's family, for they were capable men.
  • 7. These were the sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Raphael, Obed and Elzabad. His relatives, Elihu and Shemachiah, were also capable men.
  • 8. All these were descendants of Obed-Edom; they and their children and relatives were capable and fit for the work. There were a total of 62 descendants of Obed-Edom.
  • 9. Meshelemiah had 18 sons and close relatives, all of them capable men.
  • 10. These were the sons of Hosah the Merarite: Shimri, who was appointed chief by his father, even though he was not the eldest;
  • 11. Hilkiah the second; Tebaliah, the third; and Zacharias, the fourth. The sons and relatives of Hosa were 13 in all.
  • 12. These were the divisions of the gatekeepers, made by their chiefs; They performed tasks in the service of the Lord's temple, just like their relatives.
  • 13. They cast lots among the families, including young and old, to take care of each door.
  • 14. The east gate fell to Shelemiah. Then they cast lots for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and the north gate was drawn for him.
  • 15. The lot for the south gate went out to Obed-Edom, and the lot for his sons.
  • 16. The lot of the west gate and the Salequete gate, in the street above, came out for Supim and Hosa. The guards stood next to each other.
  • 17. There were six Levites a day in the east, four in the north, four in the south, and two at a time in the storehouse.
  • 18. As for the courtyard to the west, there were four in the street and two in the courtyard itself.
  • 19. These were the divisions of the gatekeepers, descendants of Korah and Merari.

Treasurers and other officers

  • 20. Other of his Levite brothers were in charge of the storehouses of the treasuries of the temple of God and the deposit of the sacred gifts.
  • 21. The Gershonites, descendants of Ladan, who were heads of families belonging to Ladan, were Jehieli

  • 23. Of the sons of Amram, Isar, Hebron and Uziel:

  • 25. His relatives from Eliezer were his son Rehabiah, who was the father of Jeshaiah, the grandfather of Joram, the great-grandfather of Zichri, the great-great-grandfather of Shelomoth.
  • 26. Shelomoth and his relatives were in charge of all the treasures consecrated by King David, by the heads of families, who were the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and by the other leaders of the army.
  • 27. They consecrated part of the spoils taken in battle for the maintenance of the temple of the Lord.
  • 28. And all the gifts consecrated by Samuel the seer, by Saul the son of Kish, by Abner the son of Ner, by Joab the son of Zeruiah, and all the other sacred gifts were under the care of Shelomoth and his relatives.
  • 29. Of the sons of Isar, Kenaniah and his sons were responsible for the public affairs of Israel, acting as officials and judges.
  • 30. Of the children of Hebron, Hashabiah and his relatives were responsible for all the work of the Lord and for the king's service in Israel, west of the Jordan; in total there were one thousand and seven hundred capable men.
  • 31. According to the genealogical records of the Hebronite families, Jeriah was their head. In the fortieth year of David's reign a search was made of the records, and among the descendants of Hebron able men were found in Jazar of Gilead.
  • 32. Jeriah had two thousand seven hundred relatives, capable men and heads of families, whom King David put in charge of all matters pertaining to God and the king's affairs in the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and in half the tribe of Manasseh.
