Saul commits suicide
- 1. And it came to pass, in battle against the Philistines, that the Israelites were defeated, and many were slain on mount Gilboa.
- 2. The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons, killing Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua, Saul's sons.
- 3. The battle intensified around Saul, and the archers caught up with him, seriously wounding him.
- 4. Then Saul commanded his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me, so that these uncircumcised people do not torture me.” But his squire was terrified and refused to do so. Then Saul took his own sword and threw himself at her.
- 5. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also threw himself on his sword and died.
- 6. So Saul and his three sons died, and all his royal descendants came to an end.
- 7. When the Israelites who lived in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and occupied them.
- 8. The next day, when the Philistines came to plunder the dead, they found Saul and his sons lying on Mount Gilboa.
- 9. They cut off Saul's head, took his weapons, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the good news in the temples of their idols and to their people.
- 10. They placed Saul's weapons in a temple of his gods and nailed his head to the temple of Dagon.
- 11. When the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
- 12. The bravest men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons, taking them to Jabesh. There they buried them under the Great Tree and fasted for seven days.
- 13. Saul died because of his unfaithfulness to the Lord. He did not obey the word of the Lord and even turned to a medium for guidance,
- 14. instead of seeking God. Therefore, the Lord handed him over to death and gave the kingdom to David, son of Jesse.
