Verses from Job, Chapter 38 of the book of Job in the Bible.
The Lord speaks
- 1. Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm and said:
- 2. “Who is this that obscures my counsel with words without knowledge?
- 3. Prepare like a simple mortal; I will ask you questions, and you will answer me.
- 4.”Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you are so wise.
- 5. Who determined your measurements, if you know? Who stretched the line over her?
- 6. What are its foundations based on? Who laid its cornerstone,
- 7. when the morning stars sang together and all the children of God shouted for joy?
- 8. “Who closed the sea with doors, when it burst out of the mother's womb,
- 9. when I clothed him with clouds and shrouded him in thick darkness,
- 10. when I set limits for him and placed doors and barriers for him,
- 11. when he said to him, 'You can come this far, and no further; here shall its proud waves be broken'?
- 12. “Have you ever given orders in the morning? He showed the dawn his place,
- 13. so that she could catch the earth by its ends and shake off the wicked from it?
- 14. The earth is transformed like clay under the seal; everything about it appears as if it were a garment.
- 15. Light is withheld from the wicked, and the uplifted arm is broken.
- 16. “Have you ever penetrated to the sources of the sea or traversed the recesses of the abyss?
- 17. Have the doors of death been revealed to you? Have you ever seen the doors of dense darkness?
- 18. Do you have any idea how vast the expanses of the earth are? Tell me, if you know.
- 19. “Where does the path where the light lives go? And where is the place of darkness,
- 20. so that you can take them to your territories, and so that you can know the way to their home?
- 21. Of course you know, after all you were already born! You have lived many years!
- 22. “Have you ever entered the storehouses of snow or seen the storehouses of hail,
- 23. what do I keep for times of trouble, for days of war and combat?
- 24. What is the path along which the rays are distributed? Where do the east winds spread over the land?
- 25. .Who opened a channel for the torrential rain, and a path for the storm
- 26. so that it may rain in lands where there is no one, in the desert where there are no human beings,
- 27. to satisfy a dry land and make it fertile by making grass grow on it?
- 28. Does rain have a father? Who gives birth to the dewdrops?
- 29. From which belly does ice come? And who gives birth to frost
- 30. when the waters become hard as stone, and the surface of the abyss freezes?
- 31. “Can you bind the Pleiades with chains? Or loosen Orion's strings?
- 32. Are you able to make the constellations arise in due time or guide the Big Dipper with her cubs?
- 33. Do you know the laws of heaven? Can you establish your dominion over the earth?
- 34. “Can you lift your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood?
- 35. Who sends the thunderbolts, so that they depart and say, 'We are here'?
- 36. Who gave wisdom to the heart and understanding to the mind?
- 37. Who has the discernment to count the clouds? Who can pour out the pitchers of heaven,
- 38. when the dust clumps together and the clods of earth come together?
- 39. “You hunt prey for the lioness and satisfy the cubs’ hunger
- 40. when they crouch in their holes or lie in wait in the thicket?
- 41. Who provides food for the crow when its young cry to God and wander for lack of food?
