The land of the Shunammite is restored

  • 1. Elisha had predicted to the mother of the boy he had resurrected: “Leave here with your family and go live where you can, because the Lord has determined a famine on this land that will last seven years.”
  • 2. The woman followed the advice of the man of God, left with her family and lived in the land of the Philistines for seven years.
  • 3. At the end of the seven years, she returned to Israel and appealed to the king to recover her house and property.
  • 4. The king was talking to Gehazi, a servant of the man of God, and said, “Tell me all the extraordinary deeds that Elisha has done.”
  • 5. While Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had resurrected the boy, the boy's own mother entered to present her petition to the king, seeking to recover her home and property. Gehazi exclaimed, “This is the woman, O my lord the king, and this is her son, whom Elisha raised from the dead.”
  • 6. The king asked the woman about the events, and she confirmed everything. Then he appointed an officer to look after her case and ordered: “Restore to her everything that belongs to her, including all the crops she would have obtained from the day she left the land until now.”

Hazael kills Benhadad

  • 7. Elisha went to Damascus on a certain occasion. Benhadad, king of Syria, was sick. When someone said to the king, “The man of God is here in the city,”
  • 8. he commanded Hazael, “Take a gift to the man of God and ask him to inquire of the Lord, asking, 'Will I recover from this illness?' “.
  • 9. Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him a gift, all the best goods from Damascus carried by forty camels. Upon arriving before Elisha, Hazael said: “Your son Benhadad, king of Syria, has sent me to ask if he will recover from this illness.”
  • 10. Elisha replied, “Go and tell him, 'You will surely recover.' However, the Lord revealed to me that he will certainly die.”
  • 11. Elisha stared intensely at Hazael, embarrassing him. And the man of God began to cry.
  • 12. Then Hazael asked, “Why does my lord weep?” He replied, “Because I know the evil things you will do to the Israelites. You will set fire to their fortresses, kill their young men with the edge of the sword, crush their children and tear the wombs of their pregnant women.”
  • 13. Hazael said, “How can this servant of yours, who is no more than a dog, do such a great thing?” Elisha replied, “The Lord has revealed to me that you will be king of Syria.”
  • 14. Then Hazael left there and returned to his master. When Benhadad asked, “What did Elisha say to you?” Hazael replied, “He told me that you will surely recover.”
  • 15. The next day, Hazael took a blanket, soaked it in water and choked the king until he killed him. Thus Hazael succeeded him as king.

Jehoram is king of Judah

  • 16. In the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, while Jehoshaphat was still king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat began to reign in Judah.
  • 17. He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
  • 18. He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab's family had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord.
  • 19. But out of love for David, his servant, the Lord did not want to destroy Judah. He had promised to keep a lamp burning forever for David and his descendants.
  • 20. In the days of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against the rule of Judah and proclaimed its own king.
  • 21. Then Jehoram went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and so did the chariot commanders, but he attacked at night and managed to break the siege. His army, however, escaped home.
  • 22. To this day, Edom remains independent of Judah. At the same time, Libnah also rebelled.
  • 23. The rest of the events of Jehoram's reign, and all the things he did, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah.
  • 24. Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaziah is king of Judah

  • 25. In the twelfth year of the reign of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram began to reign over Judah.
  • 26. Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah, granddaughter of Omri, king of Israel.
  • 27. He walked in the ways of Ahab's family and did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as Ahab's family had done, for he married a woman from Ahab's family.
  • 28. He went with Joram son of Ahab to Ramoth Gilead to fight against Hazael king of Syria. Jorão was injured in the battle.
  • 29. Then King Ahaziah went to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had received at Ramoth in the battle against Hazael king of Syria. And Jehu the son of Ninsi, a prophet, came to meet him and said, “I will judge you by the blood of Ahab and your fathers and all their house, and I will exterminate all the offspring of your house, both the slaves and the slaves. free.”
