Rape and adultery

  • 1. “If an animal, such as an ox or a sheep, belonging to an Israelite goes astray and you find it, do not ignore it, but be sure to return it to its owner.
  • 2. If the owner does not live near you or if you do not know him/her, take the animal to your home and take care of it until your compatriot comes looking for it and you can return it.
  • 3. Do the same if you find a donkey, a cloak or anything else lost. Do not ignore the fact.
  • 4. “If you come across an Israelite’s donkey or ox that has fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the animal get back on its feet.
  • 5. “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor must a man wear women’s clothing, for anyone who does this is an abomination to the Lord your God.
  • 6. “If you find a bird’s nest, whether in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on her chicks or eggs, do not take the mother and the chicks.
  • 7. You may take the cubs, but leave the mother free, so that everything will go well with you and you will have a long life.
  • 8. “When you build a new house, make a protection around the roof, so that you will not be guilty of shedding innocent blood if someone falls from it.
  • 9. “Do not plant different seeds in your vineyard, for both the seeds and the grapes will be unclean.
  • 10. “Do not work the land with an ox and a donkey together on the same plow.
  • 11. “Do not mix wool and linen in your clothes.
  • 12. “Make fringes on the four corners of the cloak you use to cover yourself.
  • 13. “If a man marries a woman and after having had sexual relations with her begins to reject her,
  • 14. and slander her, saying, 'I married this woman, but I found out that she was not a virgin,'
  • 15. The girl's parents will take proof of her virginity to the city leaders at the city gate.
  • 16. Then the girl's father will say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he rejects her.
  • 17. He accused her publicly, saying, “I have discovered that my daughter was not a virgin. Here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents will present the proof to the elders of the city,
  • 18. and they will punish the man.
  • 19. They will impose a fine of one hundred shekels of silver on him, which will be paid to the girl's father, because he has defamed an Israelite virgin. Furthermore, he will not be able to divorce her as long as he lives.
  • 20. “If, however, the accusation is true and there is no proof of the girl’s virginity,
  • 21. She will be brought to the door of her father's house, and the men of her town will stone her to death. She has committed a disgraceful act in Israel by prostituting herself in her father's house. Remove the evil from among you.
  • 22. “If a man is caught sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. Purify the evil from Israel.
  • 23. “If a man finds a young woman pledged to be married in one of the towns and sleeps with her,
  • 24. Take them both to the city gate and stone them to death. The girl did not cry out for help in the city, and the man defiled his neighbor's wife. Remove the evil from among you.
  • 25. “However, if a man finds a young woman promised in marriage in the field and forces her, only the man shall be put to death.
  • 26. Do not do anything to her, for she has not committed any sin deserving death. This case is like that of a man who attacks and kills his neighbor,
  • 27. For the man found the girl in the field, and even though the promised girl cried out, there was no one to help her.
  • 28. “If a man lies with a girl who is not promised in marriage and it is discovered,
  • 29. He shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver and marry her, because he has dishonored her. He may never divorce her.
  • 30. “No man may take his father’s wife as his wife, for that would dishonor his father’s bed.
