Mordecai is honored and Haman humiliated

  • 1. That night, King Xerxes was unable to sleep and ordered the book of chronicles of his reign to be brought to be read before him.
  • 2. They read the record that told how Mordecai had denounced Bigtan and Teresh, two of the king's officers in charge of palace security, who were conspiring to murder the king.
  • 3. The king asked, “What honor and recognition did Mordecai receive for this?” His officers responded, “Nothing was done for him.”
  • 4. The king then asked: “Who is in the courtyard?” At that moment, Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared.
  • 5. The king's officials replied, “It is Haman in the courtyard.” Then the king ordered: “Let him come in.”
  • 6. When Haman entered, the king asked, “What should be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor?” Haman thought to himself, “Who would the king want to honor more than me?”
  • 7. Then Haman answered the king, “To the man whom the king wishes to honor,
  • 8. they should bring a royal robe that belongs to the king and a horse that the king has ridden, in addition to placing the royal crown on his head.
  • 9. Then the king's most important nobles were to dress him in the robe and lead him on horseback through the streets of the city, announcing before him: 'This is what is done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!'”
  • 10. The king then said to Haman, “Go quickly, take your cloak and your horse, and do exactly as you suggested to Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting at the gate of the royal palace. Do not fail to fulfill anything you proposed.”
  • 11. Then Haman took the cloak and the horse, dressed Mordecai in the cloak, and led him on the horse through the streets of the city, proclaiming before him: “This is what is done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!”
  • 12. After this, Mordecai returned to the gate of the royal palace, but Haman hurried home, with his face covered, full of distress.
  • 13. He told his wife Zeres and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise counselors and his wife Zeres said to him: “If Mordecai, before whom you began to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not have success against him. Surely you will fall before him.”
  • 14. While they were still talking, the king's officials arrived and hurriedly took Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
