Census of Israelites

  • 1. The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting, in the wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites left Egypt. He said:
  • 2. “Take a census of the entire community of Israel, according to their families and the houses of their ancestors, counting the names of all the men,
  • 3. from twenty years old and upwards, fit to serve in the army of Israel. Make a list, according to your divisions, of their army, you and Aaron.
  • 4. “Having a man from each tribe, each of the tribal leaders, to help them,
  • 5. this is the census result:
  • Of the tribe of Reuben, Eliab, son of Zuri.
  • 6. Of the tribe of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.
  • 7. From the tribe of Judah, Nahasson son of Amminadab.
  • 8. Of the tribe of Issachar, Nathanael, son of Zuar.
  • 9. Of the tribe of Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.
  • 10. From the tribe of the sons of Joseph: From the tribe of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; Of the tribe of Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedazur.
  • 11. Of the tribe of Benjamin, Abidan, son of Gideoni.
  • 12. Of the tribe of Dan, Ahiram, son of Amisadai.
  • 13. Of the tribe of Asher, Pagiel, son of Ocran.
  • 14. Of the tribe of Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel.
  • 15. Of the tribe of Naphtali, Ahira, son of Enan.”
  • 16. These are the leaders of the tribes, the men who were called the heads of the families of their tribes. They were the leaders of the clans of Israel.
  • 17. Moses and Aaron summoned these men who had been named by name
  • 18. and called together the community on the first day of the second month. The Israelites registered, according to their families, as the LORD had commanded Moses. They were registered by name, one by one,
  • 19. from twenty years old and upward, as the LORD commanded Moses. He did this in the Sinai desert.
  • 20. The total number of those who were registered, counted by their families, was as follows:
  • Of the tribe of Reuben, forty-six thousand five hundred were recorded.
  • 21. Of the tribe of Simeon, fifty-nine thousand three hundred were recorded.
  • 22. Of the tribe of Gad, forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty were recorded.
  • 23. Of the tribe of Judah were recorded seventy-four thousand six hundred.
  • 24. Of the tribe of Issachar, fifty-four thousand four hundred were recorded.
  • 25. Of the tribe of Zebulun fifty-seven thousand four hundred were recorded.
  • 26. Of the tribe of Ephraim were recorded forty thousand five hundred.
  • 27. Of the tribe of Manasseh were registered thirty-two thousand two hundred.
  • 28. Of the tribe of Benjamin were recorded thirty-five thousand four hundred.
  • 29. Of the tribe of Dan, sixty-two thousand seven hundred were recorded.
  • 30. Of the tribe of Asher, forty-one thousand five hundred were recorded.
  • 31. Of the tribe of Naphtali were recorded fifty-three thousand four hundred.
  • 32. These were those who were recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the leaders of Israel, who were called together by their families, according to the houses of their ancestors.
  • 33. The Levites, however, were not registered among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  • 34. So the Israelites did as the LORD commanded Moses. They camped around the tent of meeting, marching, each according to his division and his standard.
  • 35. In the same way, the Israelites marched, each according to his division and his standard, under the direction of Moses and Aaron.
  • 36. And these are the descendants of Kohath, by their families: Amram, Izar, Hebron and Uzziel; and the years of Coate's life were one hundred and thirty-three years.
  • 37. The descendants of Merari, by their families, were Mali and Musi; These are the clans of Levi, according to their families.
  • 38. And Amram took his aunt Jochebed to wife, and she bore him Aaron and Moses; and the years of Amram's life were one hundred and thirty-seven years.
  • 39. And the sons of Korah were Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph; These are the clans of the Korahites.
  • 40. And Aaron took to wife Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nashan; and she gave him Nadab, and Abihu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar.
  • 41. And the sons of Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they brought strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered before the face of Aaron their father.
  • 42. And these are the registered ones of the children of Israel, six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
  • 43. But the Levites were not registered among the children of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.
  • 44. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  • 45. Take the Levites as the firstborn of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall serve in the place of all the firstborn of the children of Israel.
  • 46. And Moses gave the Levites to Aaron and his sons; according to the commandment of the LORD, by the hand of Moses.
  • 47. And this is what concerns the Levites: from the age of one month and upwards, you will take their number, according to their families, and the number of their names.
  • 48. And they will be with you, and will do the service of the tent of the congregation, for all the service of the tent; and no stranger will come near you.
  • 49. So you made the Levites a gift to Aaron and his sons; from among the children of Israel, to minister to the children of Israel in the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel; that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come unto the sanctuary.
  • 50. And Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel did to the Levites according to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites; Thus did the children of Israel do to them.
  • 51. And the Levites purified themselves, and washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them as an offering before the LORD, and made atonement for them, to purify them.
  • 52. And after this the Levites went in to do their ministry in the tent of meeting, before Aaron and before his sons; as the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.
  • 53. And the LORD said to Moses, saying:
  • 54. Take a census of the Levites, according to the houses of their fathers, according to their families; you will count every male from a month old or older.
