The purity of the camp

  • 1. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
  • 2. Command the children of Israel to cast out of the camp every leper, and everyone who has a flux, and everyone unclean because of contact with a dead body;
  • 3. You will cast out both men and women; You shall drive them outside the camp, so that they do not defile their tents, in the midst of which I dwell.
  • 4. So the children of Israel did, and cast them out of the camp; as the LORD said to Moses, so did the children of Israel.
  • 5. And the LORD said to Moses:
  • 6. Say to the children of Israel: When any man or woman commits any of the sins that men commit, transgressing against the LORD, and that person is guilty,
  • 7. then they will confess their sin, which they have committed; and for his sin he shall make restitution according to his guilt, and shall add unto it the fifth part thereof, and shall give it to him against whom he trespassed.
  • 8. But if that man has no relative to whom restitution for guilt should be made, the restitution of the guilt made to the LORD shall be the priest's, in addition to the ram of atonement with which atonement will be made for him.
  • 9. And every heave offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they bring to the priest, shall be his.
  • 10. And the holy things of each shall be his own; whatever you give to the priest will be yours.

The test of an unfaithful woman's guilt

  • 11. And the LORD said to Moses:
  • 12. Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: If anyone's wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him,
  • 13. and a man lies with her with carnal intercourse, and is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she remains hidden, without there being any witness against her, nor has she been caught in the act;
  • 14. and if a spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, because she has defiled herself; or if a spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, although she has not defiled herself;
  • 15. Then the man will bring his wife to the priest, and bring his offering for her, a tenth of an ephah of barley flour; he shall not pour oil on it, nor put incense on it, for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance.
  • 16. And the priest shall bring her, and set her before the LORD.
  • 17. And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and the priest shall take it from the earth that is on the floor of the tent, and put it into the water.
  • 18. And the priest shall make the woman stand before the LORD, and shall uncover the woman's head, and shall lay upon her hands the offering of remembrance, which is the offering of jealousy; and in the hand of the priest will be the bitter water that brings a curse.
  • 19. And the priest will make her swear, and he will say to the woman: If no man has slept with you, and if you have not turned to uncleanness under your husband's authority, you will be free from the bitter water that brings a curse.
  • 20. But if you have gone astray under the authority of your husband, and if you have defiled yourself, and a man who is not your husband has slept with you,
  • 21. Then the priest will swear to the woman with the oath of the curse, and he will say to the woman: The LORD will make you a curse and an execration among your people, and the LORD will make your thigh rot and your belly will swell;
  • 22. and this water that brings curse enters your bowels, to make your belly swell and your thigh to rot. And the woman will say: Amen, amen.
  • 23. Then the priest will write these curses in a book and erase them with bitter water.
  • 24. And he will make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, so that the water that brings a curse may enter her and be bitter.
  • 25. And the priest shall take the jealous offering out of the woman's hand, and shall offer it before the LORD, and shall offer it before the altar.
  • 26. And the priest shall take a handful of the offering as a memorial of it, and burn it on the altar; and then make the woman drink the water.
  • 27. And when she has given her to drink the water, it will come to pass, if she has defiled herself, and has been unfaithful to her husband, that the water that brings a curse into her will be bitter, and her belly will swell, and her thigh it will rot; and that woman will be a curse among her people.
  • 28. But if the woman has not defiled herself, but is clean, then she will be free, and will conceive seed.
  • 29. This is the law of jealousy, when a woman, being under the authority of her husband, goes astray and defiles herself,
  • 30. or when a spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he becomes jealous of his wife; then the woman will be presented before the LORD, and the priest will apply this entire law to her.
  • 31. So the man will be free from iniquity, and that woman will bear his iniquity.
