Victory over the Canaanites

  • 1. The king of Arad, a Canaanite, who lived in the south, heard that Israel was coming by the way of the spies, and he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.
  • 2. Then Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will completely destroy their cities.
  • 3. And the LORD heard the voice of Israel, and gave him the Canaanites, and utterly destroyed them, and their cities; and he called that place Hormah.

The bronze serpent

  • 4. Then they departed from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to encircle the land of Edom; but the soul of the people was distressed on that path.
  • 5. And the people spoke against God and against Moses: Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, that we should die in this wilderness? For here there is no bread, no water, and our soul is bored with this vile bread.
  • 6. Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people died in Israel.
  • 7. Therefore the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and against you; Pray to the LORD to take these serpents away from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
  • 8. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make for thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and every bitten person who looks at it will live.
  • 9. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon a pole; and it happened that, when someone bit a serpent, he looked at the metal serpent and remained alive.

The Journey to Moab

  • 10. And the children of Israel departed, and encamped at Oboth.
  • 11. And they departed from Oboth, and encamped in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the east.
  • 12. From there they left and camped in the valley of Zered.
  • 13. From there they departed and camped beyond the Arnon, which is in the wilderness extending from the border of the Amorites, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
  • 14. Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD: The Vaheb, in Suph and the rivers of the Arnon;
  • 15. and their tribe lodged near Jazer; and Jazer had villages; and even to Nebo and Baal-meom.
  • 16. And from there to the field, which is on the hill of Moab, which looks towards the desert.
  • 17. From there they departed and camped at the river Zered.
  • 18. From there they departed and camped on this side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness and extends beyond the borders of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
  • 19. Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD: The Vaheb in Suph and the rivers of the Arnon,
  • 20. and the brook, extending to the place of Ar and going to the border of Moab.

The defeat of Kings Sihon and Og

  • 21. And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying:
  • 22. We will not pass through your land, through the field, or through the vineyards, nor will we drink the water from the wells; we will follow the royal road, until we pass through your border.
  • 23. But Sihon did not let Israel pass through his border, but gathered all his people together and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jaza and fought against Israel.
  • 24. But Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took his land from Arnon to Jabbok, as far as the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was very strong.
  • 25. And Israel took all those cities; and he dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all his villages.
  • 26. For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites; this was the first king of the Amorites; and he fought against the former king of Moab, and took from him all his land as far as Arnon.
  • 27. Therefore those who speak in proverbs say: Come to Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and founded;
  • 28. for fire came out of Heshbon, and flame came out of the city of Sihon, and consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the heights of Arnon.
  • 29. Woe to you, Moab! You are lost, people of Chemosh! He handed over his sons as fugitives and his daughters as captives to Sihon, king of the Amorites.
  • 30. But We struck them; Heshbon was destroyed as far as Dibon, and We destroyed them as far as Nophah, which extends to Medeba.
  • 31. And Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
  • 32. And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took their villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.
  • 33. Then they turned and went up the road to Bashan; and Og, king of Bashan, went out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle in Edrei.
  • 34. And the LORD said unto him, Fear him not: for I have given him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.
  • 35. And they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until they left none alive; and took his land.
