Nehemiah's prayer

  • 1. Words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah: In the month of Kisleu, in the twentieth year, while I was in the city of Shushan,
  • 2. Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah accompanied by other men, and I asked them about the Jews who remained, the survivors of the captivity, and also about Jerusalem.
  • 3. They answered me: “Those who survived captivity and are there in the province go through great suffering and humiliation. The wall of Jerusalem was broken down, and its gates were destroyed by fire.”
  • 4. When I heard those words, I sat down and cried. I spent days lamenting, fasting and praying to the God of heaven.
  • 5. Then I said, “Lord, God of heaven, great and awesome God, faithful to your covenant and merciful to those who love you and keep your commandments,
  • 6. be attentive to my prayer and the requests of your servants who wish to revere your name. I am praying before you, day and night, confessing the sins that we, the Israelites, have committed against you. Yes, I and my people have sinned.
  • 7. We have acted corruptly and shamefully before you. We have not obeyed your commandments, decrees and laws that you gave to your servant Moses.
  • 8. Now remember what you said to Moses your servant: 'If you are faithless, I will scatter you among the nations;
  • 9. but if they return to me, observe my commandments and put them into practice, even if they are scattered throughout the most remote parts of the earth, I will gather them and bring them back to the place that I have chosen for my name to dwell in.'
  • 10. Behold, we are your servants, your people. You rescued us with your great power and with your mighty arm.
  • 11. Lord, may your ears be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in fearing your name. Grant your favor today to this servant of yours, and grant me mercy before this man.” At that time, I was the king's cupbearer.
