The Day of Atonement

  • 1. And the LORD spake unto Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they came near before the LORD.
  • 2. And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he shall not come at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat that is upon the ark, lest he die: for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.
  • 3. With this Aaron shall enter the holy place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
  • 4. He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen breeches shall be upon his flesh, and he shall be girded with a linen sash, and the linen mitre shall be upon him: these are holy garments: therefore he shall wash his flesh with water, before he put them on.
  • 5. And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
  • 6. And Aaron shall offer the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house.
  • 7. Then he shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting.
  • 8. And he shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.
  • 9. Then Aaron shall bring the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer it as a sin offering.
  • 10. But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement over it, and it shall be sent away into the wilderness as the scapegoat.
  • 11. Then Aaron shall bring the calf of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his household, and shall kill the calf of the sin offering, which is for himself.
  • 12. Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD, and his handfuls full of sweet incense ground in powder, and bring it within the veil.
  • 13. And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not.
  • 14. And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle of the blood with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward: and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.
  • 15. Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil, and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat.
  • 16. Thus he shall make atonement for the sanctuary, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, and because of all their sins: and so he shall do for the tabernacle of the congregation, which is with them in the midst of their uncleanness.
  • 17. No one shall be in the tent of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he comes out, and he shall make atonement for himself and for his household and for the whole assembly of Israel.
  • 18. Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it: and he shall take some of the blood of the bullock and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around.
  • 19. And he shall sprinkle some of the blood upon him with his finger seven times, and shall cleanse him, and sanctify him from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.
  • 20. When he has finished making atonement for the holy place, the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall bring the live goat.
  • 21. Then Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, and all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat, and shall send the goat away by the hand of a man appointed for the purpose into the wilderness.
  • 22. And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto the desert land: and he shall leave the goat in the wilderness.
  • 23. Then Aaron shall go into the tent of meeting, and take off the linen garments which he had put on when he went into the holy place, and lay them there.
  • 24. And he shall wash his flesh with water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come out, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people: and he shall make atonement for himself, and for the people.
  • 25. And he shall burn the fat of sin upon the altar.
  • 26. And he that bringeth the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall come into the camp.
  • 27. But the bullock of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried outside the camp; and their skins, their flesh, and their dung shall be burned with fire.
  • 28. And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.
  • 29. And this shall be a statute for ever unto you, that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict yourselves, and shall do no work, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.
  • 30. For on that day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
  • 31. It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls; it is a statute forever.
  • 32. And the priest who is anointed and consecrated to minister in the priest's place shall make atonement and shall put on the linen garments, the holy garments.
  • 33. And he shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and make atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.
  • 34. This shall be a statute for ever unto you, to make atonement for the children of Israel once a year for all their sins. And Moses did as the LORD commanded him.
