Judges – Old Testament

Deborah

  • 1. After Ehud's death, once again the Israelites did what the Lord disapproves of.
  • 2. So the Lord delivered them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-Hagoim.
  • 3. The Israelites cried out to the Lord, because Jabin, who had nine hundred iron chariots, had cruelly oppressed them for twenty years.
  • 4. Deborah, a prophetess, woman of Lapidoth, led Israel at that time.
  • 5. She sat under the date palm tree of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel, in the mountains of Ephraim, and the Israelites sought her, so that she could decide their questions.
  • 6. Deborah sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you to gather ten thousand men from Naphtali and Zebulun and go to Mount Tabor.
  • 7. He will cause Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, to attack him, with his chariots and troops, at the Kishon River, and will deliver them into his hands.”
  • 8. Barak said to her, “If you go with me, I will go; But if I don’t go, I won’t go.”
  • 9. Deborah replied: “Okay, I’ll go with you. But know that, because of your way of acting, the honor will not be yours; for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah went to Kedesh with Barak,
  • 10. where he summoned Zebulun and Naphtali. Ten thousand men followed him, and Deborah also went with him.
  • 11. Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the other Kenites, descendants of Hobab, Moses' father-in-law, and had pitched his tent by the oak of Zaanim, near Kedesh.
  • 12. When they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up Mount Tabor,
  • 13. Sisera gathered his nine hundred iron chariots and all his soldiers from Harosheth-Hagoim to the Kishon River.
  • 14. And Deborah also said to Barak, “Go! This is the day when the Lord delivered Sisera into his hands. The Lord is going ahead of you!” Then Barak went down Mount Tabor, followed by ten thousand men.
  • 15. Before Barak advanced, the Lord defeated Sisera and all his chariots and his army with the edge of the sword, and Sisera got out of his chariot and fled on foot.
  • 16. Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-Hagoim. Sisera's entire army fell by the edge of the sword; not a single man was left.
  • 17. But Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, wife of Kenite Heber, for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the clan of Kenite Heber.
  • 18. Jael went out to Sisera and invited him: “Come, enter my tent, my lord. Do not be afraid!" He entered, and she covered him with a cloth.
  • 19. “I'm thirsty,” he said. “Please give me some water.” She opened a vessel of milk made of leather, gave him a drink, and covered him again.
  • 20. And Sisera said to the woman, “Stay at the entrance of the tent. If anyone passes by and asks if anyone is here, say no.”
  • 21. Meanwhile, Jael, Heber's wife, took a tent peg and a hammer and approached silently while he, exhausted, slept a deep sleep. And he drove the stake into his temple until it penetrated the ground, and he died.
  • 22. Barak went looking for Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. “Come,” she said, “I will show you the man you are looking for.” And when he entered the tent, he saw Sisera lying there, dead, with the stake through his temples.
  • 23. On that day God subdued Jabin, the Canaanite king, before the Israelites.
  • 24. And the Israelites attacked Jabin the Canaanite king more and more until they destroyed him.
