The division of the rest of the territory

  • 1. The entire community of Israelites gathered in Shiloh and set up the Tent of Meeting there. The land was under their control.
  • 2. However, seven tribes had not yet received their inheritance.
  • 3. Then Joshua said to the Israelites, “How long will you delay taking possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, gave you?
  • 4. Choose three men from each tribe, and I will send them to explore the land and map it, according to the inheritance of each tribe. Then they will come back to me.
  • 5. Divide the land into seven parts. Judah will remain in its southern territory, and the tribe of Joseph in its northern territory.
  • 6. When you have finished mapping the land into seven parts, bring the map to me, and I will draw lots before the Lord our God.
  • 7. However, the Levites will not receive any portion among you, for the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance. Gad, Reuben and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received their inheritance east of the Jordan, as Moses, the servant of the Lord, commanded them.”
  • 8. As the men were setting out to explore the land, Joshua gave them instructions: “Go explore the land and give a detailed description of it. Then come back here, and I will draw lots before the Lord in Shiloh.”
  • 9. Then the men departed and went about the land. They made a map, city by city, in seven parts, and returned to Joshua in the camp of Shiloh.
  • 10. Joshua then drew lots in Shiloh before the Lord, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites, according to the portion due to each tribe.
  • 11. Luck fell to the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan. The territory drawn was between the tribes of Judah and Joseph.
  • 12. On the northern border, it began at the Jordan, passed along the northern slope of Jericho, and headed west toward the mountains, ending in the wilderness of Beth-aven.
  • 13. From there it continued to the southern slope of Luz, which is Bethel, and went down to Ataroth-Adar, on the mountain south of Lower Beth-Horon.
  • 14. From the mountain in front of Bethhoron, it went south along the western side and ended at Kiriath-Baal, which is Kiriath-jearim, a city of the people of Judah. This was the western border.
  • 15. The southern border began in the west, outside Kiriath-jearim, and reached the source of Nephtoa.
  • 16. From there it went down to the foot of the mountain north of the valley of Rephaim, north of the valley of Hinnom. It then followed the valley of Hinnom along the southern slope of the city of the Jebusites and reached En-Rogel.
  • 17. He turned north, went to En-Shemesh, went on to Geliloth, opposite the ascent of Adumim, and went down to the Rock of Boan, son of Reuben.
  • 18. It continued to the north slope of Beth Arabah and went down to the Arabah.
  • 19. Then it went to the northern slope of Beth-Hogla and ended in the northern part of the Salt Sea, at the mouth of the Jordan, in the south. This was the southern border.
  • 20. The Jordan marked the eastern border. These were the boundaries that demarcated the inheritance of the clans of Benjamin in all directions.
  • 21. The tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, received the following cities: Jericho, Beth-hogla, Emech-keziz,
  • 22. Beth Arabah, Zemaraim, Bethel,
  • 23. Avim, Para, Ofra,
  • 24. Kefar-Amomai, Ofni and Geba. There were twelve cities with their respective villages.
  • 25. Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth,
  • 26. Mizpah, Kephira, Mosa,
  • 27. Rechem, Irpeel, Tarala,
  • 28. Zela, Eleph, Jebus (or Jerusalem), Gibeah and Kiriath. There were fourteen cities with their respective towns. This was the inheritance of the clans of Benjamin.
