Joshua – Old Testament

The defeat of the northern kings

  • 1. When Jabin king of Hazor heard about this, he sent messages to Jobab king of Madon, and to the kings of Shimron and Acsaph,
  • 2. and to the kings of the north, who lived in the mountains, in the Arabah south of Chinereth, in Shephelah and in Naphoth-dor, west;
  • 3. to the Canaanites of the east and of the west, to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites of the mountains, and to the Hivites at the foot of Mount Hermon, in the region of Mizpah.
  • 4. All these kings gathered their troops, forming an army as numerous as the sand on the beach, in addition to a large number of horses and chariots.
  • 5. Together they camped by the waters of Merom, ready to fight against Israel.
  • 6. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will deliver them all dead to Israel. You must cut the horses' sinews and burn their chariots.”
  • 7. Joshua and his army surprised the enemies at the waters of Merom and attacked them.
  • 8. The Lord delivered them all into the hands of Israel, who defeated them and pursued them as far as Sidon the great, and as far as Misrephoth-maim, and as far as the valley of Mizpah on the east. They killed them leaving no survivors.
  • 9. Joshua dealt with them according to the Lord's command. He cut the horses' tendons and burned their chariots.
  • 10. At the same time, Joshua returned, conquered Hazor and killed its king with the sword. (Hazor had been the capital of all these kingdoms.)
  • 11. Joshua killed everyone in Hazor, completely exterminating them, leaving no survivors, and set fire to the city.
  • 12. Joshua conquered all those cities and killed the kings who ruled them. He completely destroyed them, fulfilling what the Lord's servant Moses had commanded.
  • 13. However, Israel did not burn any of the cities built on the hills, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
  • 14. The Israelites took for themselves all the spoil and animals of the cities, but they killed all their inhabitants with the sword, completely exterminating them, leaving no survivors.
  • 15. So Joshua fulfilled all the orders that the Lord had given Moses. Moses, in turn, had transmitted these orders to Joshua, who carried them out without failing to fulfill any of them.
  • 16. Joshua conquered the entire land: the central mountain range, the entire Negeb, the entire region of Goshen, the Shephelah, the Arabah and the mountains of Israel, with their plains.
  • 17. From Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, to Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon, at the foot of Mount Hermon. Joshua defeated and killed all the kings of these regions.
  • 18. Joshua fought against all these kings for a long time.
  • 19. Except for the Hivites who lived in Gibeon, no city made peace with the Israelites. All were conquered in combat.
  • 20. For it was the Lord himself who hardened the hearts of these nations so that they would wage war against Israel, so that they would be completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
  • 21. At that time Joshua exterminated the Anakites from the mountains of Hebron, Debir, Anab and all the mountains of Judah and Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them and their cities.
  • 22. No Anakim was left alive in the land of Israel, except in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod. Some of them survived in these cities.
  • 23. So Joshua conquered all the land, as the Lord had promised Moses, and distributed it as an inheritance to Israel according to the tribes. Then the land rested from war.
