Joshua – Old Testament

The Lord commissions Joshua

  • 1. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua, the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, saying:
  • 2. “My servant Moses has passed away. Now, you and all these people prepare to cross the Jordan River and enter the land that I am about to give to the Israelites.
  • 3. Just as I promised Moses, every place your feet step on will be given to you.
  • 4. Their territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates, to the land of the Hittites, to the Great Sea in the west.
  • 5. No one will be able to resist you every day of your life. Just as I was with Moses, I will be with you; I will never abandon you, I will never leave you.
  • 6. Be strong and courageous, for you will lead these people to inherit the land I promised their ancestors through oath.
  • 7. Just be strong and very brave! Be careful to obey all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not deviate from it to the right or to the left, so that you may be successful in everything you do.
  • 8. Do not stop speaking the words of this Book of the Law and meditating on them day and night, so that you may fulfill everything that is written in it. Then you will be successful in everything you do.
  • 9. Was it not I who commanded you this? Be strong and brave! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
  • 10. Then Joshua gave instructions to the officials of the people, saying:
  • 11. “Go through the camp and tell the people to prepare. In three days you will cross the Jordan at this point and enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.”
  • 12. To those of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said:
  • 13. “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you when the Lord your God promised you a place of rest and gave you this land.
  • 14. Your women, children, and livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all the armed men among you, ready for battle, will cross over before your fellow Israelites. You will help them
  • 15. until the Lord allows them to enjoy rest as he allowed you. Until then, they will take possession of the land that the Lord their God is giving them. After that, you can return and occupy the land that Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave you east of the Jordan, towards the sunrise.”
  • 16. Then they answered Joshua, saying, “Whatever you command us, we will do; wherever you send us, we will go.
  • 17. Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses.
  • 18. Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey your instructions, whatever you command us, will be killed. Just be strong and courageous!”
