  • 1. Job continued to speak:
  • 2. “Ah, how I miss the days gone by, the times when God protected me,
  • 3. when his lamp shone upon me, and I walked by his light in the darkness!
  • 4. Oh, how I miss the days of my youth when God's benevolence was upon me,
  • 5. When the Almighty was with me, and my children were around me,
  • 6. when the paths where I walked were bathed in milk, and the rocks poured streams of oil over me.
  • 7. “When I went to the city gate, and sat in the square,
  • 8. the young people saw me and hid, the old people stood up and bowed,
  • 9. the leaders were silent and covered their mouths with their hands.
  • 10. The voices of the nobles were silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.
  • 11. Everyone who heard me praised me, and those who saw me honored me,
  • 12. for I helped the needy who cried out for help, and the orphan who had no one to help him.
  • 13. I received the blessing of one who was about to perish, and the widow's heart rejoiced because of me.
  • 14. Righteousness was my garment, and righteousness covered me like a cloak and a turban.
  • 15. I was the eyes of the blind and the feet of the lame.
  • 16. I was a father to those in need and cared for the causes of strangers.
  • 17. I broke the jaws of the wicked, and snatched the prey from the mouth of the oppressed.
  • 18. “I thought, 'I will die in my nest, and my days will be as numerous as the sand.
  • 19. My roots extended down to the waters, and the dew remained on my branches all night.
  • 20. My honor was renewed within me, and my bow was strengthened in my hand.'
  • 21. “People listened to me anxiously, silently waiting for my words.
  • 22. After speaking, no one responded; my words fell like dew on them.
  • 23. They waited for me like rain, they drank in my words like spring rain.
  • 24. When I smiled at them, they didn't believe it; the light of my face was precious to them.
  • 25. I chose the path for them and sat as a leader among them, living like a king in the midst of their troops; I was like a comforter to those who suffered.
