Job's second test

  • 1. On another day, the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself.
  • 2. The Lord asked Satan, “Where did you come from?” Satan replied to the Lord, “I have gone through the earth and walked in it.”
  • 3. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you seen my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him, upright and just, fears God and avoids evil. He remains intact even after you incited me against him to ruin him for no reason.”
  • 4. Satan replied: “Skin for skin! A man will give everything he has for his own life.
  • 5. Stretch out your hand and touch his flesh and his bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
  • 6. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Well then, he is in your hands; just spare his life.”
  • 7.Satan left the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with evil sores, from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
  • 8. Job picked up a piece of pottery to scrape himself as he sat in the ashes.
  • 9. Then his wife said to him, “Do you still maintain your integrity? Curse God and die!”
  • 10. He replied: “You speak like a fool. Will we accept the good given by God and not the evil?” In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

Job's three friends

  • 11. When three of Job's friends, Eliphaz of Teman, Bildad of Shuah and Zophar of Naamath, learned of all the problems that were afflicting him, they agreed to meet to console him and show solidarity.
  • 12. When they saw Job from afar, they barely recognized him and began to weep loudly. Each of them tore his own cloak and threw dirt over his own head.
  • 13. Then they sat with Job on the ground, remaining there for seven days and seven nights, without saying a word, because they saw how much he suffered.
