Job – Old Testament

Job's character and wealth

  • 1. In the land of Uz there lived a man named Job. He was an upright and righteous man, fearing God and avoiding evil.
  • 2. He had seven sons and three daughters.
  • 3. He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys and had many servants. He was the richest man in the East.
  • 4. His children used to hold parties at their homes, each on their own day, and invited their three sisters to eat and drink together.
  • 5. After the feast days, Job sent messengers to sanctify them, getting up early in the morning to offer burnt offerings, one for each of them, because he thought: “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job's constant practice.

Job is subject to the first test

  • 6. On a certain day, the angels appeared before the Lord, and Satan was also among them.
  • 2. The Lord asked Satan, “Where did you come from?” Satan replied to the Lord, “I have gone through the earth and walked in it.”
  • 8. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you seen my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him, blameless and just, fearing God and avoiding evil.”
  • 9. Satan replied, “Does Job fear God for no reason?
  • 10. Haven't you protected him, his family and everything he has? You have blessed the work of their hands, so that their flocks have spread throughout the land.
  • 11. But stretch out your hand and touch everything he has, and he will curse you to your face.”
  • 12. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Everything he has is in your power, but do not touch him.” And Satan left the presence of the Lord.
  • 13. One day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their older brother's house,
  • 14. a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing near them,
  • 15. when the Sabeans attacked and took them away. They killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone escaped to tell you!”
  • 16. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “Fire from God fell from heaven and burned the sheep and the servants, and I alone escaped to tell you!”
  • 17. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said: “The Chaldeans formed three groups, attacked the camels and took them away. They killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone escaped to tell you!”
  • 18. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the elder brother’s house,
  • 19. when a very strong wind came from the desert and hit the four corners of the house, causing it to collapse. All your sons and daughters died, and I alone escaped to tell you!”
  • 20. Then Job arose, tore his robe, shaved his head, and fell on his face, worshiping,
  • 21. and said, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will return. The Lord gave it, the Lord took it away; Praised be the name of the Lord.”
  • 22. In all this, Job did not sin and did not attribute any blame to God.
