Joseph and hunger

  • 1. Joseph went to inform Pharaoh: “My father and my brothers, with their sheep and their herds, their possessions and everything they have, have arrived from the land of Canaan and are in Goshen.”
  • 2. He chose five of his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
  • 3. Pharaoh asked them: “What are your occupations?” They replied: “Your servants are shepherds of sheep, like our ancestors.”
  • 4. They also said to Pharaoh: “We have come to live as foreigners in this land, because there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore we ask that your servants may dwell in the land of Goshen.”
  • 5. Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you,
  • 6. and Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. If you know capable men among them, make them stewards of my flocks.”
  • 7. And Joseph brought Jacob his father and presented him to Pharaoh. Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
  • 8. Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
  • 9. Jacob replied, “The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty. The years of my life were few and bad and do not reach the years of the lives of my ancestors in the land of their pilgrimages.”
  • 10. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from his presence.
  • 11. Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them property in Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the region of Ramesses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
  • 12. And Joseph fed his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to the number of his sons.
  • 13. There was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very severe, and both Egypt and Canaan were failing because of the famine.
  • 14. Joseph collected all the money that was found in Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain that the people bought, and deposited it in Pharaoh's house.
  • 15. And when the money had run out in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread; why should we die in your presence for lack of money?”
  • 16. Joseph replied, “Give me your flocks, and I will give them to you for food if you lack money.
  • 17. Then they brought their flocks to Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, in exchange for flocks of sheep and oxen, and for asses; and he fed them with bread that year in exchange for all their livestock.
  • 18. When that year was over, they came to Joseph in the second year and said to him: “We will not hide you from our lord, who, when the money and our flocks are gone, not one is left with you; We have nothing left but our bodies and our lands.
  • 19. Why should we and our lands die before your eyes? Buy us and our lands for bread, and we and our lands will be servants of Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that our lands may not be desolate.”
  • 20. So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed upon them; and the land became Pharaoh's.
  • 21. And as for the people, he led them to the cities, from one end to the other of the borders of Egypt.
  • 22. The only land he did not buy was that of the priests, because they had a portion of food determined by Pharaoh, and they ate the portion that Pharaoh gave them; That's why they didn't sell their land.
  • 23. Joseph said to the people, “Today I bought you and your lands for Pharaoh; here is seed for you to sow the earth.
  • 24. When you gather the fifth part for Pharaoh, the four parts will be yours, to sow the fields, and to support you, for yourselves, for your homes, and for your children.”
  • 25. And they said, “You saved our lives! May we find favor in the eyes of our lord, and we will be servants of Pharaoh.”
  • 26. Thus, Joseph established a law, valid until today, that the fifth part of the harvests would belong to Pharaoh, except that of the priests' lands which, as they belonged to Pharaoh, were not subject to that law.
  • 27. Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen, where they acquired property and were fruitful and multiplied greatly.
  • 28. Jacob lived seventeen years in Egypt, and Jacob's life was one hundred and forty-seven years.
  • 29. As the time approached for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him: “If it is your will, I ask you to put your hand under my thigh and do me a favor. Promise me that you will treat me kindly and faithfully, not burying me in Egypt.
  • 30. When I rest with my fathers, take me from Egypt and bury me in their tomb.” Joseph replied, “I will do as you said.”
  • 31. Jacob insisted: “Swear to me!” And Joseph swore to him. Then Israel leaned against the head of the bed.
