Jacob goes to Egypt

  • 1. Israel left with everything they had. When he arrived in Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.
  • 2. During the night God spoke to Israel in a vision and said: “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied.
  • 3. “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation.
  • 4 I will go with you to Egypt, and I will certainly bring you back again. And Joseph will close his eyes.”
  • 5. Then Jacob left Beersheba. The children of Israel took their father Jacob, his sons and their wives in the chariots that Pharaoh had sent to transport them.
  • 6. They also took their livestock and their possessions that they had acquired in the land of Canaan. Jacob and his entire family went to Egypt.
  • 7. He took his sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters, and all his descendants with him into Egypt.
  • 8. These are the names of the children of Israel, Jacob and his descendants, who went into Egypt: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.
  • 9. The sons of Reuben: Enoch, Palu, Hezron and Carmi.
  • 10. The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zoar and Saul, the son of a Canaanite woman.
  • 11. The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
  • 12. The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
  • 13. The sons of Issachar: Tolah, Puah, Job and Sinrom.
  • 14. The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon and Jaleel.
  • 15. These are the children that Leah had with Jacob in Paddan-Aram, in addition to her daughter Dinah. Total of his sons and daughters: thirty-three.
  • 16. The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Hagui, Sunni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
  • 17. The sons of Asher: Imna, Isvah, Isvi, Beriah and Sera, their sister. The sons of Berias: Heber and Malkiel.
  • 18. These are the sons of Zilpah, to whom Laban gave his daughter Leah. She bore these sons to Jacob, sixteen in all.
  • 19. The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin.
  • 20. There were born to Joseph in Egypt, before Jacob arrived, Manasseh and Ephraim, sons whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him.
  • 21. The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Bequer, Asbel, Gera, Naaman, Ei, Ros, Muppim, Huppim and Arde.
  • 22. These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob, fourteen in all.
  • 23. The son of Dan: Hushim.
  • 24. The sons of Naphtali: Jaziel, Guni, Jezer and Shilehem.
  • 25. These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, and she bore these sons to Jacob, seven in all.
  • 26. The total number of people who went with Jacob to Egypt, excluding the wives of Jacob's sons, was sixty-six.
  • 27. The total number of people from Jacob's family who went to Egypt was seventy.
  • 28. Jacob sent Judah ahead to tell Joseph of his arrival in Goshen. When they arrived in Goshen,
  • 29. Joseph ordered his chariot to be prepared and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as she saw him, she threw herself on his neck and cried for a long time.
  • 30. Israel said to Joseph, “Now I can die, because I have seen your face and know that you are alive.”
  • 31. Joseph said to his brothers and his father's family, “I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and I will say, 'My brothers and my father's family, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
  • 32. These men are shepherds; They and their ancestors have always dedicated themselves to raising livestock.
  • 33. And when Pharaoh calls you and asks, 'What is your business?'
  • 34. say, 'Your servants have been shepherds from our youth until now, both we and our ancestors.' This way you will be able to live in the region of Goshen, because all sheepherders are considered detestable by the Egyptians.”
