José makes himself known

  • 1. Joseph could no longer control himself in front of all his assistants, and he exclaimed: “Get everyone out of my presence!” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.
  • 2. And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and the news reached Pharaoh's palace.
  • 3. Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers were paralyzed with fear when they heard this.
  • 4. Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me.” As they approached, he said, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery into Egypt.
  • 5. But now, do not worry or feel guilty about having sold me, for it was to save lives that God sent me before you.
  • 6. The famine that has plagued the land has lasted two years, and there will be another five years in which there will be no cultivation or harvest.
  • 7. God sent me before you to preserve a remnant for you in this land and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
  • 8. So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me counselor to Pharaoh, lord of all his house and governor of all the land of Egypt.
  • 9. “Now quickly return to my father and say to him, 'This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come here, don't delay!
  • 10. We will live in this land where there will be enough food for everyone. Come with your children and grandchildren, with your sheep and goats, with everything you have.
  • 11. I will take care of you here, for there will still be five years of famine. This way, you and your family won't have to be in need.'
  • 12. You can see with your own eyes, as well as my brother Benjamin, that I am the one speaking to you.
  • 13. Inform my father of my high position in Egypt and of all that you have seen. Bring my father here quickly.”
  • 14. Then Joseph threw himself on his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, and Benjamin also embraced him and wept.
  • 15. Joseph kissed all his brothers and wept with them. After that, his brothers talked to him.
  • 16. When news reached Pharaoh's palace that Joseph's brothers had arrived, Pharaoh and his counselors were pleased.
  • 17. And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Tell your brothers, 'Do this: Load your animals and return to the land of Canaan.
  • 18. Bring your father and your families and come to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the best produce of the land.'
  • 19. “I also command you to do this: Take chariots from the land of Egypt for your sons and their wives, and help their father come here.
  • 20. Do not worry about your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt will be yours.”
  • 21. So the children of Israel did as they were commanded. Joseph gave them cars, as Pharaoh ordered, and supplies for the journey.
  • 22. He gave them new clothes, but Benjamin gave three hundred pieces of silver and five sets of clothes.
  • 23. And he sent the following gifts to his father: ten male donkeys laden with the best produce of Egypt, and ten female donkeys laden with grain, bread and provisions for the journey.
  • 24. He sent his brothers away, and when they left, he said to them, “Don’t fight on the way.”
  • 25. They left Egypt and came to the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father.
  • 26. They told him the news: “Joseph is still alive! He is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” Jacob was astonished, as he could not believe what he heard.
  • 27. But when they told Jacob everything that Joseph had told them, and when he saw the chariots that Joseph had sent to take him, Jacob's spirit returned to him.
  • 28. And Israel said, “Enough! My son José is still alive. I will see him before I die!”
