Judah and Tamar

  • 1. It happened about this time that Judah went away from his brothers and went to stay in the house of a man from Adullam, whose name was Hira.
  • 2. There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite, whose name was Shua, and he took her as his wife, and lived with her.
  • 3. She conceived and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er.
  • 4. She conceived again and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.
  • 5. She conceived again and gave birth to another son, and she named him Shelah. He was in Kezib when she gave birth to him.
  • 6. Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
  • 7. But Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil before the Lord, so the Lord killed him.
  • 8. Then Judah said to Onan, “Marry your brother’s widow, and fulfill your brother-in-law’s obligation to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
  • 9. However, Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, whenever he married his brother's wife, he spilled the semen on the ground, so as not to give offspring to his brother.
  • 10. And what he did was evil before the Lord, so he also killed him.
  • 11. Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Return to be a widow in your father's house, until Shelah my son grows up,” for he was afraid that he too would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went and lived in her father's house.
  • 12. After a long time, the daughter of Shuah, Judah's wife, died. After the mourning was over, Judah went up to Timnah, where his shearers were, he and his friend Hira the Adullamite.
  • 13. Tamar was informed that her father-in-law was on his way to Timnah to shear the sheep.
  • 14. Then she took off her widow's clothing, covered herself with a veil, disguised herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. This is because she saw that Shelah was already grown up, but had not been given to him as a wife.
  • 15. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because she had covered her face.
  • 16. He wandered over to her by the wayside and said, “Allow me to have sex with you.” He, however, did not know that it was Tamar, his daughter-in-law. She replied: “What will you give me so that you can have sex with me?”
  • 17. He replied, “I will send you a kid from my flock.” But she asked, “Will you give me a pledge until you send it?”
  • 18. He replied, “What pledge should I give you?” She replied: “Your seal with the cord and staff that you have in your hands.” He gave them to her, had sex with her and she became pregnant by him.
  • 19. Then she got up and went away, taking off her veil and putting on her widow's clothes again.
  • 20. Judah sent the goat through his Adullamite friend to get the pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.
  • 21. He asked the men of that place, “Where is the prostitute who was by the wayside in Enaim?” They replied, “There has never been a prostitute here.”
  • 22. He returned to Judah and said, “I have not found her. Even the men of that place said that there were never any prostitutes there.”
  • 23. Judah said, “Let her have what she has. We don't need to be ashamed. I sent you the goat, as I promised, but you did not find it.”
  • 24. It came to pass, about three months later, that they said to Judah, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has committed prostitution, and because of this she is pregnant.” Judah ordered: “Bring her out and let her be burned alive!”
  • 25. While she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, “I am pregnant by the man who owns these things.” And he added: “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”
  • 26. Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I did not hand her over to my son Shelah.” And he never had sex with her again.
  • 27. When the time came for her to give birth, it was found that there were twins in her womb.
  • 28. As she was giving birth, one of them stretched out his hand; the midwife took a red thread and tied it to the child's wrist, saying, "This one came out first."
  • 29. But he withdrew his hand, and his brother went out first. Then the midwife said, “How did you manage to break through?” Therefore he was called Perez.
  • 30. After this the brother who had the red thread on his wrist came out, and he was called Zerah.
