Abraham and Abimelech

  • 1. And Abraham went from there to the land of the Negeb, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and sojourned in Gerar.
  • 2. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife: She is my sister; for she was my father's daughter, but not my mother's daughter; and she became my wife.
  • 3. And it came to pass, as God caused me to err from my father's house, that I said unto him, This is the kindness which thou wilt show me in every place whither we come; you will say about me: He is my brother.
  • 4. And Abimelech took sheep and herds, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him.
  • 5. And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee; dwell where it is good in your eyes.
  • 6. And he said unto Sarah, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, let him be to you a veil covering your eyes to all who are with you, and to all; so she was reprimanded.
  • 7. And now therefore return the woman to the man, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live; and if you do not return it, know that you will certainly die, you and everything that is yours.
  • 8. Then Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their ears; and they feared men greatly.
  • 9. And Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, What have you done to us? And in what have I sinned against you, that you have brought upon me and upon my kingdom such a sin? You did to me what you shouldn't have done.
  • 10. And Abimelech said to Abraham, What have you seen that you have done this?
  • 11. Abraham replied: Because I said that there is certainly no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.
  • 12. And indeed she is also my sister, my father's daughter, but not my mother's daughter; and she became my wife.
  • 13. And it came to pass, when God caused me to err from my father's house, that I said unto him, This is the kindness which thou shalt do unto me: in every place whither we come thou shalt say of me, He is my brother.
  • 14. Then Abimelech took sheep and herds, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him.
  • 15. And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee; dwell where it is good in your eyes.
  • 16. And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, let him be to you a veil covering your eyes to all who are with you, and to everyone else; so she was reprimanded.
  • 17. And Abraham prayed to God, and healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants, so that they had children;
  • 18. for the Lord had completely shut up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
