Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed

  • 1. The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, while Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When he saw them, he rose to meet them and fell facedown to the ground.
  • 2. And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and spend the night there, and wash your feet; and early in the morning you may rise up and go on your way. And they said, No; for we will spend the night in the street.
  • 3. But he urged them hard, and they went with him and entered his house, and he made them a feast and baked unleavened cakes, and they ate.
  • 4. But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter.
  • 5. And they called to Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came unto thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
  • 6. Then Lot went out to them at the door, and shut the door after him,
  • 7. And he said, I beseech you, my brethren, do not so wickedly.
  • 8. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known men; I will bring them out to you, and you shall do with them as seems good to you; only do nothing to these men, for therefore they have come under the shadow of my roof.
  • 9. But they said, Get thee hence. And they said, This man is come to dwell here, and will he be a judge in all things? Now we will do thee more harm than them. And they rushed upon the man, even upon Lot, and came near to break down the door.
  • 10. But the men stretched out their hands and pulled Lot in to them, and shut the door;
  • 11. And they struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, from the least to the greatest, so that they were weary trying to find the door.
  • 12. And the men said unto Lot, Have ye here any man besides, thy son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and all that thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
  • 13. For we will destroy this place, because their outcry has grown great before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.
  • 14. Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up, get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But his sons-in-law thought he was mocking.
  • 15. And when the morning came, the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters, which are here, lest thou be consumed in the punishment of the city.
  • 16. But he lingered; and the men took him by the hand, and his wife, and his two daughters, the Lord being merciful unto him, and brought him forth, and set him outside the city.
  • 17. And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that one of them said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
  • 18. But Lot said unto them, Oh, no, my lord!
  • 19. Behold, now thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed me in preserving my life: but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest evil come upon me, and I die.
  • 20. Behold, now the city is near to flee thither, and it is a little one: let me now escape thither (is it not a little one?), that my soul may live.
  • 21. And he said unto him, Behold, I have accepted thee also in this thing, that I will not overthrow the city of which thou hast spoken.
  • 22. Hurry and escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
  • 23. The sun was already rising over the land when Lot arrived in Zoar.
  • 24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;
  • 25. and overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
  • 26. And Lot's wife looked back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt.
  • 27. And Abraham went up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord.
  • 28. And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and saw, and, behold, smoke rose from the land, as of a furnace.
  • 29. And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and brought Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he destroyed the cities wherein Lot dwelt.

Lot and his daughters

  • 30. So Lot went up from Zoar and lived in the mountain, and his two daughters with him. For he was afraid to live in Zoar, so he lived in a cave, he and his two daughters.
  • 31. Then the firstborn said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is no man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth.
  • 32. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him, that we may preserve seed from our father.
  • 33. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn came and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
  • 34. On the morrow the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, last night I lay with my father; and we made him drink wine this night also: go in, lie with him, that we may preserve seed by our father.
  • 35. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
  • 36. Thus both of Lot's daughters were with child by their father.
  • 37. The firstborn bore a son and named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
  • 38. The younger also bore a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.
