The Tower of Babel

  • 1. The whole earth had one language and one language.
  • 2. And when the men moved toward the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and there they dwelt.
  • 3. They said to one another: Come, let us make bricks and burn them well. The bricks served as stone and the bitumen as mortar.
  • 4. They said, Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top may reach to heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.
  • 5. Then the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building;
  • 6. and the Lord said: Behold, the people are one, and they all have the same language. This is just the beginning; now there will be no restrictions on everything they intend to do.
  • 7. Look, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that one does not understand the other's language.
  • 8. So the Lord scattered them from there across the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.
  • 9. Therefore his name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there he scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
