The reconstruction of the altar

  • 1. In the seventh month, when the Israelites were already in their cities, the people gathered together in Jerusalem as one man.
  • 2. Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, as well as Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his fellow priests, began to build the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, according to what is written in the Law of Moses , the man of God.
  • 3. Despite their fear of the people around them, they built the altar at its base and there they offered burnt offerings to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices.
  • 4. Furthermore, as prescribed, they celebrated the Feast of Booths with the prescribed number of daily burnt offerings.
  • 5. They offered the regular burnt offerings, the new moon sacrifices, and the sacrifices prescribed for all the holy festivals of the Lord, as well as the freewill offerings presented to the Lord.
  • 6. From the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, although the foundations of the Lord's temple had not yet been laid.

Repair of the temple foundations

  • 7. Financing and beginning of construction of the temple 7Then they gave money to the masons and carpenters, and also food, drink and oil to the Sidonians and Tyrians to bring cedar logs from Lebanon to Joppa by sea, according to the authorization given by King Cyrus of Persia.
  • 8. In the second year after their arrival at the temple of God in Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and their brothers, the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned from exile to Jerusalem, they began to work. They appointed Levites aged twenty or older to oversee the construction of the Lord's temple.
  • 9. Jeshua, his sons and brothers, and Kadmiel and his sons, descendants of Hodaviah, joined the Levites to supervise those who worked on the work of the temple of God.
  • 10. When the builders laid the foundations of the temple of the Lord, the priests dressed in their priestly garments and blowing trumpets, and the Levites, descendants of Asaph, with cymbals, were ready to praise the Lord, according to the instructions of David king of Israel.
  • 11. Responsively singing to the Lord with praise and gratitude, they proclaimed: “He is good; his love for Israel endures forever.” And all the people praised the Lord with great joy, for the foundations of the temple of the Lord had been laid.
  • 12. However, many elderly priests, Levites, and householders who had seen the ancient temple wept aloud as they looked at the foundations of that temple. At the same time, many others were shouting with joy.
  • 13. The noise of jubilation and crying was mixed in such a way that one could not distinguish one sound from the other. The sound could be heard from a great distance.
