Aaron spokesman for Moses

  • 1. The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.
  • 2. You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall speak to Pharaoh, that he may let the Israelites go out of his land.
  • 3. But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt.
  • 4. But Pharaoh will not listen to them. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring out my armies and my people the Israelites from the land with great judgments.
  • 5. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of there.”
  • 6. Moses and Aaron did what the Lord commanded them.
  • 7. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Moses' rod turns into a serpent

  • 8. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron:
  • 9. “If Pharaoh asks you to perform a miracle, tell Aaron to throw his staff in front of Pharaoh, and it will turn into a snake.”
  • 10. Then Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw down the staff in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it turned into a snake.
  • 11. But Pharaoh called for the wise men and enchanters, and they also, by means of their enchantments, did the same thing.
  • 12. They each threw down their staffs, and they became snakes. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.
  • 13. But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

The plague of waters turned to blood

  • 14. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn; he refuses to let the people go.
  • 15. Go to Pharaoh in the morning when he is going out to the river, and wait for him on the bank of the Nile. Take in your hand the staff that turned into a snake.
  • 16. Say to him, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you with this message: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. Until now you have not obeyed me.
  • 17. This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord: With the staff in my hand I will strike the waters of the Nile, and they will turn to blood.
  • 18. The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink. The Egyptians will be disgusted with drinking the water of the Nile.”
  • 19. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over the rivers, streams, ponds and all the pools of water—so that they may become blood. There will be blood throughout the land, even in vessels of wood and stone.’”
  • 20. Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded them. In the presence of Pharaoh and his officials, Aaron raised his staff and struck the waters of the Nile, and all the water in the Nile turned to blood.
  • 21. The fish in the Nile died, the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink the water from the Nile. There was blood all over the land.
  • 22 But the sorcerers of Egypt did the same thing by their enchantments, so that Pharaoh's heart remained obstinate. He did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
  • 23. Pharaoh returned to the palace and paid no attention to it.
  • 24. And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile for fresh water, for they could not drink the water of the river.
  • 25. Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile.
