God's Ten Commandments

  • 1. And God spoke all these words, saying:
  • 2. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
  • 3. You will have no other gods before me.
  • 4. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
  • 5. You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me
  • 6. and show mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
  • 7. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him innocent who takes his name in vain.
  • 8. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  • 9. Six days you will work, and do all your work,
  • 10. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God; you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your livestock, nor the foreigner who is within your gates;
  • 11. for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and on the seventh day he rested; Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it.
  • 12. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
  • 13. Thou shalt not kill.
  • 14. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • 15. Thou shalt not steal.
  • You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  • 17. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.
  • 18. And all the people saw the thunder and the lightning, and the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off.
  • 19. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou unto us, and we will hear; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.
  • 20. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: God is come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye may not sin.
  • 21. And the people stood afar off; but Moses approached the darkness, where God was.

Idols and altars

  • 22. And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have spoken unto you from heaven.
  • 23. You shall make no other gods with me; you shall not make gods of silver or gods of gold for yourselves.
  • 24. You shall make me an altar of earth, and upon it you shall sacrifice your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your flocks and your herds; In every place where I celebrate the memory of my name, I will come to you and bless you.
  • 25. And if you make me an altar of stones, you shall not make them of hewn stones; for if you lift your chisel over them, you will profane them.
  • 26. And you shall not ascend to my altar by steps, lest your nakedness be uncovered before them.
