The death of the firstborn

  • 1. The Lord said to Moses, “I will bring another plague on Pharaoh and Egypt. After that, he will let them go from here. When he lets them go, he will drive them out of here completely.
  • 2. “Now speak to the people and tell them that both men and women should ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.”
  • 3. The Lord caused the people to find favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and Moses was also highly esteemed in Egypt by Pharaoh's counselors and the people.
  • 4. Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: 'About midnight I will go out into the middle of Egypt,
  • 5. and every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on the throne, to the firstborn of the slave who works at the mill, and to the firstborn of the animals.
  • 6. There will be a great outcry throughout Egypt, such as never was before and never will be again.
  • 7. But not even a dog will bark against any of the Israelites, neither man nor beast, so that you may know that the Lord has made a distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites.'
  • 8. “All these counselors of yours will come before me, bowing down before me, and say, 'Come out, you and all the people who follow you!' After that I will leave.” Then, full of anger, Moses left Pharaoh's presence.
  • 9. The Lord had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”
  • 10. Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the Israelites leave his country.
