Ecclesiastes - Old Testament.
Ecclesiastes – Old Testament.
  • 1. Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them.”
  • 2. before the sun and the light, the moon and the stars are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain;
  • 3. When the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men walk bent over; when the grinders stop because they are few, and those who look out of the windows see dimly;
  • 4. when the street doors are closed and the sound of the grinding dies down; when the noise of the birds wakes you up, but the sound of all the songs seems faint to you;
  • 5. When you are afraid of heights and the dangers of the streets; when the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper is a burden and desire no longer awakens. Then man goes to his eternal home, and mourners roam the streets.
  • 6. Yea, remember him, before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken; before the pitcher is shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern;
  • 7. The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
  • 8. “All nonsense! Nonsense!” says the master. “Nothing makes sense! Nothing makes sense!”

The conclusion

  • 9. Besides being wise, the master also taught knowledge to the people. He listened, examined and collected many proverbs.
  • 10. He also sought to find the right words, and what he wrote was straight and true.
  • 11. The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like nails driven in, coming from the one Shepherd.
  • 12. Be careful, my son; do not add anything to them. There is no limit to the production of books, and too much studying exhausts the body.
  • 13. Now that everything has been heard, here is the conclusion: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the most important thing for man.
  • 14. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.
