Deuteronomy - Old Testament
Deuteronomy – Old Testament

Joshua successor of Moses

  • 1. Moses addressed all Israel and said:
  • 2. “I am one hundred and twenty years old and can no longer lead you. The Lord said to me, ‘You will not cross the Jordan.’
  • 3. But the Lord your God will go before you and destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua will go before you, as the Lord promised.
  • 4. The Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land.
  • 5. The Lord will give them to you, and you will do with them everything I have commanded you.
  • 6. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified of them, for the Lord your God will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
  • 7. Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people to the land the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you will divide it among them as an inheritance.
  • 8. The Lord will go before you; he will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Reading the law

  • 9. Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the leaders of Israel.
  • 10. And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the year of release, during the Feast of Tabernacles,
  • 11. When all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law in the hearing of all Israel.
  • 12. Gather the people together—men, women, children, and the foreigners who are in your towns—so that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God and be careful to follow all the words of this law.
  • 13. Then your children who do not know it will hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as they live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

The Succession of Moses

  • 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The day of your death is near. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission you.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting.
  • 15. Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar hovered over the entrance to the tent.
  • 16. And the Lord said to Moses, “You are about to go to sleep with your ancestors, and this people will rise up and prostitute themselves after the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them.
  • 17. In that day my anger will burn against them, and I will abandon them. I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many evils and afflictions will come upon them, and in that day they will say, 'Have not these evils come upon us because our God is no longer with us?'
  • 18. But I will surely hide my face in that day, because of all the evil they have done in turning to other gods.
  • 19. Now write this song for yourselves and teach it to the Israelites. Put it in their mouths, so that this song may serve as a testimony for me against the people of Israel.
  • 20. When I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I swore to their ancestors to promise, and they eat their fill and prosper, and turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my covenant,
  • 21. Then, when many evils and afflictions come upon them, this song will testify against them, for it will not be forgotten by their descendants. For I know their purpose even before I bring them into the land I swore to them to promise.”
  • 22. That same day Moses wrote this song and taught it to the Israelites.
  • 23. Then the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, “Be strong and courageous, for you will lead the Israelites into the land I swore to give them, and I myself will be with you.”
  • 24. After Moses had finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end,
  • 25. He gave the following order to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord:
  • 26. “Put this Book of the Law beside the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
  • 27 For I know your rebellion and your stubbornness. If you rebel against the Lord while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel against him after my death!
  • 28. Gather before me all the tribes of Israel, together with their leaders and officers, so that I may speak these words in their presence and call heaven and earth to witness against them.
  • 29. For I know that after my death you will corrupt yourselves and turn away from the way I have commanded you. Disaster will come upon you in the last days, because you will do evil in the eyes of the Lord, provoking him to anger with the works of your hands.”

The song of Moses

  • 30. Then Moses recited the words of this song in the presence of the entire assembly of Israel, from beginning to end.
