Deuteronomy – Old Testament

The defeat of King Og of Bashan

  • 1. Then we turned and went up towards Bashan, and Og, king of Bashan, went out with all his army to meet us at Edrei.
  • 2. The Lord said to me, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your hands, along with all his army and his land. Treat him as you treated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.”
  • 3. So the Lord our God also delivered Og king of Bashan and all his army into our hands. We defeated him, leaving no survivors.
  • 4. When we conquered all your cities, none of them were impenetrable. They were all taken, because the Lord, our God, gave them all to us.
  • 5. However, we did not take the cities of the Amorites in the highlands, from Aroer to Gilead, because the region of the Amorites was considered the land of the Rephaim.
  • 6. Og, king of Bashan, was the last of the Rephaim. His iron bed is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It is nine cubits long and four cubits wide, according to the cubit used in human measurement.
  • 7. At that time we took possession of this land. I gave to the half tribe of Manasseh the region of Aroer, which is in Bashan. (All of Bashan was considered the land of the Rephaim.)
  • 8. To the tribes of Reuben and Gad I gave part of Bashan up to the river Arnon, forming the border. (The Arnon Brook was the border of the country.) I also gave them the region known as Gilead.
  • 9. Then I took possession of the region between the river Arnon and Mount Hermon, including half the mountain of Gilead, with its cities.
  • 10. To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the region from Gilead to the River Arnon (the border) and half the mountain range of Gilead, with its cities.
  • 11. But the Reubenites and Gadites had a large number of livestock. When they saw the region of Jazar and Gilead, they thought it was a suitable place for livestock.

The division of the land

  • 12. So they said, “If you think it is good, allow us to stay here as your servants with our flocks, and we will build pens here for our livestock and cities for our children.
  • 13. But we ourselves will arm ourselves and go before the Israelites until we have taken them to their place. Meanwhile, our children will remain in the fortified cities, protected from the inhabitants of this land.
  • 14. We will not return home until each of the Israelites has received his inheritance.
  • 15. We will have no inheritance with them on the west side of the Jordan, for our inheritance will be given to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
  • 16. Then I answered them, “If you are willing to go ahead of our brothers, prepared for war, and if you all cross the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven you out,
  • 17. and if you do whatever the Lord commands, obeying him in everything he says, and if you and everyone who follows you go to war before the Lord until he has driven out his enemies from before him,
  • 18. Then, after the Lord has driven out your enemies before you and subdued them, the land of Canaan will be before the Lord. After that, you will return and be free from the Lord and his people.
  • 19. The land that you will possess is located east of the Jordan, in the southern regions.
  • 20. The Lord gave them rest and made them prosper in everything they had in their hands. Now may the Lord be with you!”

God forbids Moses from crossing the Jordan

  • 21. Then I commanded Joshua, saying, “You have seen everything that the Lord your God did to these two kings. The Lord will do the same to all the kingdoms you pass through.
  • 22. Do not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God will fight for you.”
  • 23. At that time I also prayed to the Lord:
  • 24. “O Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand! What god in heaven or on earth can do works and deeds as powerful as yours?
  • 25. Let me cross over and see this good land on the other side of the Jordan, this good and mountainous region, and Lebanon.”
  • 26 But the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. Then the Lord said to me, “Enough! Don’t talk to me about this anymore.
  • 27. Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west, north, south and east. Look with your own eyes, for you will not cross the Jordan.
  • 28. Give orders to Joshua, encourage him and strengthen him, for he will cross over before this people and help them take possession of the land that you will see.”
  • 29. So we camped in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
